For the week that ended on March 8th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Gladiator II topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its first week. Ridley Scott's long-delayed sequel to his Oscar-winning
Gladiator (2000) opened in November 2024 to broadly positive reviews and box office success, though with a shoot impacted by the 2023 Hollywood strikes and a reported budget of around $250 million or higher, the film's haul of over $172 million domestically and over $462 million globally likely means it underperformed at the box office. However, Paramount can tout that the film has come out of the gate strongly on Blu-ray and especially 4K UHD, with both releases featuring a Blu-ray disc of extras and the 4K UHD edition also including a Blu-ray copy of the film. This week,
Gladiator II had an HD share of 52%, with 52% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping back into second place on the Blu-ray-only chart in its fifth week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Wicked (2024). The hotly anticipated film adaptation of the hit 2003 musical topped the box office on its first weekend in November 2024, en route to over $473 million domestically and over $735 million globally. Upon opening, the film was revealed to adapt only part of the story, and a sequel,
Wicked: For Good, is set to release November 2025. The film earned ten Oscar nominations and won two, for Best Costume Design and Best Production Design. This week,
Wicked sold 57% as many Blu-ray units as
Gladiator II, with an HD share of 50% and 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and MGM's
Red One. The Christmas-themed action-comedy received mostly negative reviews in November 2024 and despite opening in first place, bombed at the box office when it grossed less than $98 million domestically and less than $186 million globally, against a reported budget of between $200-250 million. However, as with other seasonal favorites, the film may get a second life next holiday season, where it could break back into the home video charts, though a limiting factor is the complete absence of any extras from the film's Blu-ray or 4K UHD releases. This week,
Red One sold 56% as many Blu-ray units as
Gladiator II, with an HD share of 42% and just 9% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Kraven the Hunter and Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Den of Thieves 2: Pantera debuted at Nos. 4 and 5, respectively, on the Blu-ray-only chart.
