For the week that ended on February 8th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Wicked (2024) topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The hotly anticipated film adaptation of the hit 2003 musical, which in turn was based on a 1995 novel that "re-imagined"
The Wizard of Oz, opened in November 2024 over the Thanksgiving holiday to success with critics and audiences alike, topping the box office on its first weekend with over $112 million, en route to over $472 million domestically and over $727 million globally so far. Upon opening, the film was revealed to adapt only part of the story, and a sequel,
Wicked: For Good, is set to release November 2025. The film has also earned numerous awards and nominations, including the second Golden Globe Award for Cinematic and Box Office Achievement (following
Barbie in 2024), seven nominations and two wins at the BAFTA Awards, Best Film from the National Board of Review and ten nominations at the upcoming Academy Awards, including Best Supporting Actress for Ariana Grande, Best Actress for Cynthia Erivo and Best Picture. This week,
Wicked had an HD share of 69%, with 33% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to second place in its third week is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Venom: The Last Dance. The third and apparently final entry in Sony's
Venom franchise opened in October 2024 to mixed reviews and box office success, topping the box office on its opening weekend en route to over $139 million domestically and over $478 million worldwide. This week,
Venom: The Last Dance sold just 9% as many Blu-ray units as
Wicked, with an HD share of 50% and 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
And dropping to third place in its third week is MUBI's
The Substance. The body horror film starring Demi Moore and Margaret Qualley has been a critical success ever since it was nominated for the Palme d'Or and won the Best Screenplay award at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2024. The film also won the Golden Globe for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Musical or Comedy for Demi Moore and has been nominated for five Oscars, including Best Actress for Moore, Best Director for Coralie Fargeat and Best Picture. This week,
The Substance sold just 7% as many Blu-ray units as
Wicked, with an HD share of 74% and 43% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Walt Disney Home Entertainment and Searchlight Pictures'
A Real Pain debuted at No. 20 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while Cineverse's
Terrifier 3 Limited Edition Collector's Box Set 4K (which was released several weeks after the film's standard
4K UHD and
Blu-ray editions) came in at No. 11 on the UHD Sellers chart.
