For the week that ended on December 21st, Cineverse's
Terrifier 3 topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The third entry in the slasher franchise sees Art the Clown wreaking havoc over the holiday season, and on its release in October 2024, the film caused a sensation at the box office as it beat Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Joker: Folie à Deux, then it its second week in cinemas, to top the weekend with over $18 million. All told, the film has made over $53 million domestically and over $88 million worldwide so far. This week,
Terrifier 3 had a strong HD share of 73%, with 48% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place on both charts, but topping the UHD Sellers chart for the week, is Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Transformers One. The animated prequel, which tells the backstories of Optimus Prime and Megatron, the future leaders of the Autobots and the Decepticons, respectively, opened in September 2024 to positive reviews and sported a family-friendly PG rating where previous live-action entries had been PG-13. Despite this, the film was something of a disappointment at the box office, opening in second place behind Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Beetlejuice Beetlejuice in its third week. Internationally, the film has done slightly better, bringing in over $70 million so far, for a global total of over $129 million. This week,
Transformers One sold 97% as many Blu-ray units as
Terrifier 3, with an HD share of 69% and 69% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. In an unusual move, Paramount opted not to release the film in a separate Blu-ray edition, offering only a 4K UHD and Blu-ray combo pack in both
standard and
SteelBook packaging.
Dropping to third place in its third week is Walt Disney Home Entertainment and 20th Century Studios'
Alien: Romulus. The seventh film in the long-running
Alien franchise opened in August 2024 to positive reviews and topped the box office on its opening weekend with $42 million, eventually grossing over $105 million domestically and over $350 million globally. This week,
Alien: Romulus sold 58% as many Blu-ray units as
Terrifier 3, with an HD share of 65% and 23% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in fourth place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Joker: Folie à Deux. A sequel to
Joker was inevitable when, despite an R-rating, the supervillain origin story grossed over $1 billion at the box office back in 2019, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film to that point, until
Deadpool & Wolverine came along five years later. Unfortunately, the sequel simply did not deliver what audiences expected, and so,
Joker: Folie à Deux became a massive box-office bomb, grossing about $38 million on its opening weekend, before plummeting 81% in its second weekend to gross only $7 million and finish behind
Terrifier 3. To date, the film has grossed just over $58 million domestically and over $206 million worldwide. This week,
Joker: Folie à Deux sold 44% as many Blu-ray units as
Terrifier 3, with an HD share of 63% and 34% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Discotek Media's anime release of
Digimon: Digital Monsters - The Movies 1-3 (1999-2000) came in at No. 9 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while outside the top ten, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Seinfeld: The Complete Series (1989-1998) which was released on Blu-ray and 4K UHD this week, came in at No. 18.
Elsewhere on the UHD Sellers chart, Arrow Video's
Demolition Man 4K came in at No. 5, while Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Kickboxer 4K and
Stir of Echoes 4K, both Amazon exclusives, came in at Nos. 10 and 16, respectively. Finally, Shout Factory's
The Holdovers 4K came in at No. 19.
