Blu-ray Sales: October 20-26: Deadpool & Wolverine Tops the Charts in Its First Week

For the week that ended on October 26th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment and 20th Century Studios' Deadpool & Wolverine topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The 34th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe (and the first not to be rated PG-13 in the United States) functioned both as the third film in the Deadpool franchise and as a team-up between Ryan Reynolds' Deadpool and Hugh Jackman's Wolverine, two long running, fan favorite portrayals of the Marvel heroes which had been part of the former 20th Century Fox and had not been seen for several years. Smashing box office records when it opened in July 2024, Deadpool & Wolverine has grossed over $636 million domestically and over $1.3 billion worldwide so far, becoming the highest-grossing R-rated film of all time (surpassing Joker (2019) by around $300 million) and the second-highest-grossing film of 2024 to date, behind only Inside Out 2. This week, Deadpool & Wolverine had an HD share of 75% and 38% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Debuting in second place on both charts is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Twisters. The long-gestating sequel to the 1996 film Twister finally opened in July 2024--a week before Deadpool & Wolverine--to mostly positive reviews and box office success, eventually grossing over $267 million domestically and $370 million worldwide. This week, Twisters sold 31% as many Blu-ray units as Deadpool & Wolverine, with an HD share of 56% and 25% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And debuting in third place on both charts is Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Borderlands. An adaptation of the video game series of the same name, Borderlands failed to impress fans and critics alike, opening in fourth place in August 2024 and grossing about $15 million domestically and $33 million worldwide on a reported budget of well over $100 million. This week, Borderlands sold 8% as many Blu-ray units as Deadpool & Wolverine, with an HD share of 64% and 29% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the Blu-ray-only chart, Disney's The Sixth Sense (1999) and Signs, both of which were issued on 4K UHD this week, came in at Nos. 5 and 6. Outside the top ten, Viz Media's Bleach: Thousand Year Blood War - Part 2: The Separation and RLJE Films' Oddity debuted at Nos. 12 and 13, while Universal and Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Twisters Double Feature (1996-2024) debuted at No. 17. Rounding out the top twenty Blu-rays was Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Columbia Classics Collection: Volume 5 (1926-2019) at No. 19 and RLJE Films' In a Violent Nature at No. 20.

Elsewhere on the UHD Sellers chart, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Ghost 4K (1990) came in at No. 6, Shout Factory's The Wolfman 4K (2010) and Death Becomes Her 4K came in at Nos. 8 and 9, and Warner's The Hitcher 4K (1986) came in at No. 10. Outside the top ten, Kino Lorber's The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari 4K (1920) came in at No. 12, while Cult Epics' Cheeky! 4K, Arrow Video's Hellraiser: Quartet of Torment 4K (1987-1996) and the Criterion Collection's Gummo 4K came in at Nos. 15, 16 and 17, respectively.
