For the week that ended on September 21st, Walt Disney Home Entertainment and Pixar Animation Studios'
Inside Out 2 remained on top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its second week. The animated sequel opened in June 2024--nine years after the first film--and received positive reviews. However, it blew past expectations at the box office, grossing $295 million worldwide on its opening weekend and outgrossing its predecessor in just 16 days. So far, the film has grossed a stunning $1.69 billion worldwide, becoming both the highest-grossing film of 2024 so far and the highest-grossing animated film of all time. This week,
Inside Out 2 had an HD share of 48% and 2% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. Note that Disney made the film available on 4K UHD only in a
Limited Edition SteelBook.
Remaining in second place on both charts in its second week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1. The ambitious epic Western is the first part of a planned four-part series from director and star Kevin Costner, of which
Chapter 2 has already been completed and had been intended to release just weeks after the first film opened in June 2024. Unfortunately, the mixed critical reception and poor box office results of
Chapter 1 (just over $36 million worldwide against a budget of $50 million) has now delayed
Chapter 2 from August 2024 to an unspecified release date. This week,
Horizon: An American Saga - Chapter 1 sold 36% as many Blu-ray units as
Inside Out 2, with an HD share of 34% and 10% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Bringing Out the Dead. The 1999 film from Martin Scorsese was released in a 4K UHD combo pack this week, simultaneously making its world premiere on Blu-ray. This week,
Bringing Out the Dead sold 28% as many Blu-ray units as
Inside Out 2, with a perfect HD share of 100% and, naturally in this case, 100% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Arrow Video's releases of
The Chronicles of Riddick came in at No. 5 on the Blu-ray only chart (and No. 2 on the UHD Sellers chart), while Paramount's
Reacher: Season Two (2023-2024) debuted at No. 9. Elsewhere on the UHD Sellers chart, Shout Factory's
Doomsday 4K (2008) came in at No. 10, while the Criterion Collection's
The Long Good Friday 4K came in at No. 13.
