Blu-ray Sales: July 14-20: Civil War Still Rages in Second Week

Posted July 29, 2024 03:12 PM by Sean Greenwood

For the week that ended on July 20th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Civil War topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its first week. Alex Garland's thriller opened in April 2024 to mostly positive reviews, topping the box office and eventually grossing over $68 million domestically and over $122 million worldwide. This week, Civil War had a perfect HD share of 100% and 26% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Remaining in second place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Shout Factory and GKIDS' The Boy and the Heron (AKA How Do You Live?) (君たちはどう生きるか), Studio Ghibli's latest anime film, for which legendary director Hayao Miyazaki came out of retirement, opened in Japan in July 2023 to box office success and critical acclaim. It did the same when it opened in the US in early December 2023, topping the box office on its opening weekend en route to a global total of over $294 million (becoming the fifth highest-grossing Japanese film of all time), and winning dozens of awards, including the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, the Golden Globe for Best Animated Feature Film and in the UK, the BAFTA for Best Animated Film. This week, The Boy and the Heron sold 80% as many Blu-ray units as Civil War, with a perfect HD share of 100% and 46% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Rising back up to the top three Blu-rays is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Dune: Part Two. With 2021 predecessor Dune actually being Dune: Part One, the second part was greenlit as soon as that film proved to be a box office hit in October 2021. Both parts ended up overcoming challenges--Dune: Part One had to contend with a simultaneous release to streaming and theaters, while Dune: Part Two found itself delayed by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes of 2023, ultimately moving from November 2023 to March 2024. However, like its predecessor, Dune: Part Two opened to critical acclaim and box office success, grossing over $282 million domestically and over $711 million worldwide. This week, Dune: Part Two sold 42% as many Blu-ray units as Civil War, with an HD share of 84% and 66% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Paramount Home Media Distribution's The SpongeBob SquarePants Movie 4K, which was released this week, came in at No. 6 on the UHD Sellers chart.
