Blu-ray Sales: June 9-15: Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire Reigns Supreme in Debut

For the week that ended on June 15th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire debuted on top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. Ten years on from Godzilla (2014), the fifth film in the Monsterverse franchise--itself a direct sequel to Godzilla vs. Kong--opened in March 2024 to mixed reviews, but just as Godzilla vs. Kong helped to revive the box office in 2021, three years later, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire also became a financial success, grossing over $196 million domestically and over $567 million worldwide. This week, Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire had an HD share of 63% and 25% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Dropping to second place on both charts in its fifth week is Warner's Dune: Part Two. With 2021 predecessor Dune actually being Dune: Part One, the second part was greenlit as soon as that film proved to be a box office hit in October 2021. Both parts ended up overcoming challenges--Dune: Part One had to contend with a simultaneous release to streaming and theaters, while Dune: Part Two found itself delayed by the SAG-AFTRA and WGA strikes of 2023, ultimately moving from November 2023 to March 2024. However, like its predecessor, Dune: Part Two opened to critical acclaim and box office success, grossing over $282 million domestically and over $711 million worldwide. This week, Dune: Part Two sold just 15% as many Blu-ray units as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with an HD share of 69% and 27% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Debuting in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Shout Factory's Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning. The anime film, a sequel to 2020's Digimon Adventure: Last Evolution Kizuna, opened in Japan in October 2023 and was given a limited two-day theatrical release in North America in November 2023. This week, Digimon Adventure 02: The Beginning sold 8% as many Blu-ray units as Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, with a perfect HD share of 100%.

Elsewhere on the charts, Decal Releasing's Immaculate (2024) debuted at No. 6 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while outside the top ten, BBC's Doctor Who: The Celestial Toymaker debuted at No. 11 and Warner's Superman & Lois: The Complete Third Season (2023) debuted at No. 14.

Things were even more active on the UHD Sellers chart, where Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's La Femme Nikita 4K (AKA Nikita) (1990) came in at No. 3, Shout's Species II 4K came in at No. 5 and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Shrek: 4-Movie Collection 4K (2001-2010) and the individual release of Shrek Forever After 4K came in at Nos. 7 and 9, respectively. Outside the top ten, Arrow Video's Mute Witness 4K came in at No. 12, while MPI Home Video's The Last Kumite 4K debuted at No. 18.
