Blu-ray Sales: February 18-24: Hunger Games Prequel Still on Top in Second Week

For the week that ended on February 24th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes remained on top of the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its second week. The latest film in the Hunger Games franchise is a prequel set decades before the adventures of Katniss Everdeen, and opened in November 2023 to mixed reviews. However, with a budget of $100 million, the film found financial success, topping the box office in its first two weekends en route to over $166 million domestically and a global haul of over $337 million. This week, The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes had a strong HD share of 85%, with 23% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Remaining in second place on both charts is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's The Marvels. The 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was both a sequel to the billion-dollar hit Captain Marvel (2019) and a continuation of the TV miniseries Ms. Marvel (2022), but while its cinematic predecessor was sandwiched almost directly between the Marvel "team-up" films Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and Avengers: Endgame (2019), The Marvels didn't have that kind of hype to build off of, and was further hampered by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which curtailed promotion for the film. Thus, when it opened in early November 2023, The Marvels topped the box office, but with just $46 million. Things did not improve for the film in subsequent weeks, as it received mixed reviews and struggled to just over $84 million domestically and $206 million worldwide (on a budget of approximately $275 million), becoming the lowest-grossing MCU film. This week, The Marvels sold 47% as many Blu-ray units as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, with an HD share of 61% and 21% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Rising back into the top three this week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Oppenheimer (2023). Based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005), Oppenheimer displays many of director Christopher Nolan's characteristic traits, notably the use of celluloid film, especially large formats like 65mm and IMAX film, the latter of which was used not just in color sequences, but in black-and-white footage, too. To that end, Oppenheimer also became the first feature since Tenet to receive a release on massive IMAX 70mm film prints as well as standard 70mm and 35mm film prints for theaters which still had the capability to project film. As Nolan is a major proponent of the theatrical experience, Oppenheimer also enjoyed an extended run in cinemas, grossing some $950 million worldwide. On January 23rd, 2024, the film received 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography, amongst many others. This week, Oppenheimer sold 32% as many Blu-ray units as The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, with an HD share of 65% and 30% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Shout Factory's Darkman, which was released on 4K UHD and remastered Blu-ray, came in at No. 6 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Paprika (2006), which was also released on 4K UHD, came in at No. 8. Outside the top ten Blu-rays, the Criterion Collection release of The Heroic Trio / Executioners (1993) came in at No. 17 and Kino Lorber's Leviathan (1989) came in at No. 19.

On the UHD Sellers chart, Darkman 4K came in at No. 4, Paprika 4K (2006) came in at No. 6, while Leviathan 4K (1989) came in at No. 9 and The Heroic Trio / Executioners 4K (1993) came in at No. 11. Additionally, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Beverly Hills Cop: 3-Movie Collection 4K (1984-1994) came in at No. 7 and the standalone release of Beverly Hills Cop III 4K came in at No. 10. Outside the top ten, Kino's The Last Castle 4K came in at No. 16.
