For the week that ended on February 17th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes topped the Blu-ray-only chart in its debut. The latest film in the
Hunger Games franchise is a prequel set decades before the adventures of Katniss Everdeen, and opened in November 2023 to mixed reviews. However, with a budget of $100 million, the film found financial success, topping the box office in its first two weekends en route to over $166 million domestically and a global haul of over $337 million. This week,
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes had a strong HD share of 71%, with 23% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place on both the the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
The Marvels. The 33rd film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe was both a sequel to the billion-dollar hit
Captain Marvel (2019) and a continuation of the TV miniseries
Ms. Marvel (2022), but while its cinematic predecessor was sandwiched almost directly between the Marvel "team-up" films
Avengers: Infinity War (2018) and
Avengers: Endgame (2019),
The Marvels didn't have that kind of hype to build off of, and was further hampered by the 2023 WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes, which curtailed promotion for the film. Thus, when it opened in early November 2023,
The Marvels topped the box office, but with just $46 million. Things did not improve for the film in subsequent weeks, as it received mixed reviews and struggled to just over $84 million domestically and $206 million worldwide (on a budget of approximately $275 million), becoming the lowest-grossing MCU film. This week,
The Marvels sold 73% as many Blu-ray units as
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, with an HD share of 69%. One bright spot for the film is that it managed to top the UHD Blu-ray Sellers chart, finally dethroning
Oppenheimer (2023), which fell to No. 6 after having topped that chart for the previous twelve weeks.
The Marvels saw 37% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to third place on both charts in its fifth week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Trolls Band Together. The family film sequel finds main characters Branch and Poppy on a mission to rescue Branch's brother Floyd, who has been kidnapped. The film opened in November 2023 to mixed reviews and just managed to crack $100 million at the domestic box office, with its $205 million global haul considerably better than the pandemic-impacted 2020 release of
Trolls World Tour, but still significantly less than the $347 million gross of the original
Trolls in 2016. This week,
Trolls Band Together sold 14% as many Blu-ray units as
The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, with an HD share of 53% and 5% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Lionsgate's
Priscilla debuted at No. 5 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while BBC's latest natural history series
Planet Earth III (2023) debuted at No. 7 and Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Footloose (1984), which was released on 4K UHD this week, came in at No. 8. Outside the top ten Blu-rays, Relativity Media's
Hypnotic (2023) debuted at No. 14.
This week also saw numerous additional new 4K UHD releases enter the Top Ten UHD Blu-ray Sellers chart, with the aforementioned
Planet Earth III 4K (released only as a 4K UHD / Blu-ray combo pack) coming in at No. 4, and Paramount's
Footloose 4K (1984) coming in at No. 5. Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Columbia Classics Collection: Volume 4 4K (1940-2002) came in at No. 8 and Shout Factory's
Willy's Wonderland 4K came in at No. 10.
