Blu-ray Sales: January 14-20: Trolls Band Together to Beat Oppenheimer

For the week that ended on January 20th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Trolls Band Together debuted on top of the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The family film sequel finds main characters Branch and Poppy on a mission to rescue Branch's brother Floyd, who has been kidnapped. The film opened in November 2023 to mixed reviews and just managed to crack $100 million at the domestic box office, with its $205 million global haul considerably better than the pandemic-impacted 2020 release of Trolls World Tour, but still significantly less than the $347 million gross of the original Trolls in 2016. This week, Trolls Band Together had a healthy HD share of 61%, but just 7% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Dropping to second place for only the second time in nine weeks is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Oppenheimer (2023). Based on the book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005), Oppenheimer displays many of director Christopher Nolan's characteristic traits, notably the use of celluloid film, especially large formats like 65mm and IMAX film, the latter of which was used not just in color sequences, but in black-and-white footage, too. To that end, Oppenheimer also became the first feature since Tenet to receive a release on massive IMAX 70mm film prints as well as standard 70mm and 35mm film prints for theaters which still had the capability to project film. As Nolan is a major proponent of the theatrical experience, Oppenheimer also enjoyed an extended run in cinemas, grossing some $950 million worldwide. On January 23rd, 2024, the film received 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography, amongst many others. This week, Oppenheimer sold 45% as many Blu-ray units as Trolls Band Together, with an HD share of 66% and 39% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Taking third place on both charts this week is Universal's Five Nights at Freddy's. An adaptation of the horror video game series of the same name, Five Nights at Freddy's was made for just $20 million and opened in October 2023 to generally negative critical response, but shocked the box office by opening at number one with an $80 million haul, especially impressive given that the PG-13 film was simultaneously available for streaming. Although the film dropped precipitously afterwards, it continued to make money, remaining at the top of the box office again in its second week, with over $19 million. Altogether, the film grossed some $137 million domestically and $289 million worldwide. This week, Five Nights at Freddy's sold 33.09% as many Blu-ray units as Trolls Band Together, with an HD share of 55% and 7% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Journey to Bethlehem was the week's top new release, coming in at No. 8 on the Blu-ray-only chart. While Oppenheimer remained the top UHD release for units sold, Sony's 4K UHD release of The Raid: Redemption took No. 11 on the Blu-ray-only chart and topped the UHD Market Share chart for the week, with over 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
