For the week that ended on January 6th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Oppenheimer (2023) yet again topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its seventh week. Based on the book
American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer (2005),
Oppenheimer displays many of director Christopher Nolan's characteristic traits, notably the use of celluloid film, especially large formats like 65mm and IMAX film, the latter of which was used not just in color sequences, but in black-and-white footage, too. To that end,
Oppenheimer also became the first feature since
Tenet to receive a release on massive IMAX 70mm film prints as well as standard 70mm and 35mm film prints for theaters which still had the capability to project film. As Nolan is a major proponent of the theatrical experience,
Oppenheimer also enjoyed an extended run in cinemas, grossing some $950 million worldwide. On January 23rd, 2024, the film received 13 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Supporting Actress, Best Supporting Actor and Best Cinematography, amongst many others. This week,
Oppenheimer had an HD share of 67% and 36% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Taking second place on both charts this week is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny. The fifth Indiana Jones film was the first in the series not to be directed by Steven Spielberg, with James Mangold taking the director's chair. However, series star Harrison Ford did return for the new film, which is set in 1969 and sees Jones and his goddaughter racing to recover an artifact that could alter time and change the outcome of World War II. The film opened at the Cannes Film Festival in May 2023, where Ford's performance received positive reviews, though reaction to the film as a whole was mixed. Eventually,
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny managed over $174 million domestically and over $383 million globally, but with the film's extremely high budget of almost $300 million, it is unfortunately considered a box office bomb. On January 23rd, 2024, the film received an Oscar nomination for John Williams' score (which is available as an isolated sore option in Dolby Atmos on 4K UHD and in Dolby Digital Plus 7.1 on Blu-ray) extending the legendary 91-year-old composer's record number of Oscar nominations to 54. This week,
Indiana Jones and the Dial of Destiny sold 56.34% as many Blu-ray units as
Oppenheimer, with an HD share of 48% and 13% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
And taking third place on both charts this week is Universal's
Five Nights at Freddy's. An adaptation of the horror video game series of the same name,
Five Nights at Freddy's was made for just $20 million and opened in October 2023 to generally negative critical response, but shocked the box office by opening at number one with an $80 million haul, especially impressive given that the PG-13 film was simultaneously available for streaming. Although the film dropped precipitously afterwards, it continued to make money, remaining at the top of the box office again in its second week, with over $19 million. Altogether, the film grossed some $137 million domestically and $289 million worldwide. This week,
Five Nights at Freddy's sold 55.72% as many Blu-ray units as
Oppenheimer, with an HD share of 54% and 7% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
The week's top new release was Universal's
The Holdovers. The comedy-drama, set at a New England prep school over Christmas 1970, saw director Alexander Payne reunite with actor Paul Giamatti two decades after
Sideways (2004) and has been a hit with audiences and critics alike. On January 23rd, 2024, the film received 5 Oscar nominations, including Best Picture, Best Actor and Best Supporting Actress. This week,
The Holdovers sold 37% as many Blu-ray units as
Oppenheimer, with an HD share of 52%. A 4K UHD edition has not been made available at this time.
