For the week that ended on November 4th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The seventh installment of the action franchise finds superspy Ethan Hunt up against a malevolent artificial intelligence, and was so big that it needed to be split into two parts, with the second part recently delayed from 2024 to 2025 due to the SAG-AFTRA strike. Filming on
Dead Reckoning Part One began in February 2020 and was then shut down by the coronavirus pandemic, which delayed filming more than once and pushed it into 2021 and 2022. When the film was finally completed, the budget had reportedly inflated to over $291 million, giving
Dead Reckoning Part One an enormous hurdle to clear at the box office. Sadly, while the film opened in July to positive reviews and even with star Tom Cruise championing the cinema experience in general,
Dead Reckoning Part One simply couldn't overtake fellow blockbusters
Barbie and
Oppenheimer, both of which were released just a week later. Having said that,
Dead Reckoning Part One did do decent business, making over $54 million on its opening weekend en route to over $174 million domestically and an even better global haul of over $567 million so far. Neither, it seems, has the series faltered on home video, as this week,
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One had an HD share of 70% and 33% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Remaining in second place on both charts in its third week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Barbie. Greta Gerwig's film is set in Barbie Land, where Barbie and her fellow dolls live in harmony with Ken dolls, at least until Barbie has an existential crisis, leading her and Ken on a journey to the real world. Marking the first live-action adventure for the beloved fashion doll that debuted in 1959, expectations for
Barbie were high, with a large marketing campaign and a key summer release date. The film opened to critical acclaim, grossing over $162 million on its opening weekend and outperforming expectations. There was also a bit of serendipity, as
Barbie ended up releasing on the same weekend as
Oppenheimer, a three-hour biopic about the "father of the atomic bomb", J. Robert Oppenheimer, which was released by rival studio Universal Pictures, but which was also positioned to be a blockbuster due to the success of its director, Christopher Nolan. However, instead of the two films cannibalizing each other, a social media phenomenon developed which was dubbed "Barbenheimer", whereby people sought to see both films back-to-back as a double feature. The result was a combined weekend gross of over $246 million for both films. But
Barbie has also proved to be a juggernaut of its own, eventually grossing some $636 million domestically and over $1.44 billion worldwide so far, surpassing
The Super Mario Bros. Movie to become the highest-grossing film of 2023 to date. This week,
Barbie sold 43% as many Blu-ray units as
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, with an HD share of 57% and 7% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
And debuting in third place on both charts is Warner Bros.Home Entertainment's
Blue Beetle. The studio's latest DC superhero film opened in August 2023 to positive reviews, but with the impending reboot of the entire DCEU film series, it is perhaps not surprising that
Blue Beetle became a box office bomb, managing to top the box office on its opening weekend, but with only some $25 million. Unfortunately, the numbers got worse from there, and
Blue Beetle managed only about $72 million domestically and just $129 million worldwide, on a reported budget of over $100 million. This week,
Blue Beetle sold 40% as many Blu-ray units as
Mission: Impossible - Dead Reckoning Part One, with an HD share of 65% and 20% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Retribution (2023) debuted at No. 6 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while Warner's
Justice League x RWBY: Super Heroes & Huntsmen, Part Two came in at No. 7 and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
My Big Fat Greek Wedding 3 debuted at No. 9.
