For the week that ended on October 7th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment and 20th Century Studios'
Prey (2022) topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The latest entry in the
Predator film franchise finds the titular monster hunting a Comanche tribe in the early 18th century, something which was alluded to back in the first sequel,
Predator 2, in 1990. Perhaps because last theatrical entry,
The Predator, was a critical and commercial disappointment back in 2018, the decision was made to make
Prey a film for the Hulu streaming service, as opposed to giving it a theatrical release. Many fans were concerned that without a theatrical release,
Prey would also skip home video, but happily, Disney and 20th Century Studios announced a Blu-ray and 4K UHD release back in August 2023, about a year after the film was originally released on Hulu. The strategy has paid off, as
Prey won the week with an HD share of 67% and 33% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place on both charts was Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Talk to Me (2022). The Australian horror film was made for less than $5 million and opened to strong reviews in July 2023, where it made over $10 million on its opening weekend and so far, has grossed over $89 million worldwide. This week,
Talk to Me sold 71% as many Blu-ray units as
Prey, with a perfect HD share of 100% and 41% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
And third place on the Blu-ray-only chart went to Lionsgate's
The Mist (2007). The film by Frank Darabont, who had also directed adaptations of other Stephen King works, such as
The Shawshank Redemption and
The Green Mile, received mixed-to-positive reviews on its original release, but has been treated well on home video, receiving a two-disc Blu-ray release back in 2008 (just about six months after its original home video release on DVD), with both the original color version of the film and an alternate black and white version. Both versions have also been included in this week's 4K UHD release, which contains both cuts and all the extras from the 2008 release. This week,
The Mist sold 41% as many Blu-ray units as
Prey, with a perfect HD share of 100% and 41% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
RWBY: Volume 9 debuted at No. 14 on the Blu-ray-only chart and Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
It Came from Outer Space, which was released on 4K UHD this week, came in at No. 20.
