Blu-ray Sales: September 10-16: Across the Spider-Verse on Top in Second Week

For the week that ended on September 16th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse remained atop both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its second week. The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finds Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy traveling across the multiverse and meeting the Spider-Society, and it began development even before the first film was released and became a breakout hit back in 2018. Like its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was both a critical and commercial success, earning positive reviews from both critics and audiences and grossing over $381 million domestically and $689 million worldwide, so far. This week, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had an impressive HD share of 78%, with 29% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Coming in second place on the Blu-ray-only chart this week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm. The animated feature by the team behind Batman: The Animated Series was conceived as a direct-to-video release, before Warner made a late call to give the film a Christmas 1993 theatrical release. Although it failed to catch fire at the box office, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm received positive critical reviews and over the decades, it gained legendary status among Batman fans through home video. Despite this, the film was not remastered and released on Blu-ray until 2017, but months later its sequel, Batman & Mr. Freeze: SubZero also got a release, and before the year 2018 was out, Warner had also released all 109 episodes of Batman: The Animated Series on Blu-ray, even putting together a box set, Batman: The Complete Animated Series, which contained both films and the TV series together. Now, five years later, Warner revisted Batman: Mask of the Phantasm for its 30th anniversary, granting it both a 4K scan and a 4K UHD release with HDR, as well as both the original DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio track and a brand new DTS-HD MA 5.1 mix. Additionally, the film got its first bonus content, as a new featurette celebrating Kevin Conroy, the beloved voice actor of Batman who passed away in 2022, was included on the 4K UHD disc. This week, Batman: Mask of the Phantasm sold 26% as many Blu-ray units as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with a perfect HD share of 100% and 99.58% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And dropping to third place on both charts in its third week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Flash (2023). The theatrical version of the DC Comics character first appeared in a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, but an announced solo film was delayed several times, including by the Warner Bros. Discovery merger in April 2022, as well as a series of high-profile arrests for the film's star, Ezra Miller, and the announced reboot of the entire DCEU franchise. Unfortunately, the many delays and controversies seem to have affected audience enthusiasm for The Flash, which has a global haul of just $268 million so far. Given the reported budget of $200 million or more, it is estimated that the film will lose some $200 million and go down in history as a major box office bomb. This week, The Flash sold 23% as many Blu-ray units as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with an HD share of 56% and 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Joy Ride (2023) and Cobweb (2023) debuted at No. 9 and No. 12, respectively, on the Blu-ray only chart, while Warner and MGM's release of Air (2023) came in at No. 14. None of the three new releases were available on 4K UHD. AMC Studios' The Walking Dead: Dead City - Season One came in at No. 17.
