Blu-ray Sales: September 3-9: Across the Spider-Verse Traps The Flash in Its Web(s)

For the week that ended on September 9th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse easily topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The sequel to Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse finds Miles Morales and Gwen Stacy traveling across the multiverse and meeting the Spider-Society, and it began development even before the first film was released and became a breakout hit back in 2018. Like its predecessor, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse was both a critical and commercial success, earning positive reviews from both critics and audiences and grossing over $381 million domestically and $689 million worldwide, so far. This week, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse had an impressive HD share of 85%, with 39% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. A two-film bundle, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse / Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was released in separate Blu-ray or 4K UHD editions, had an HD share of 77%, with 11% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Dropping to second place on both charts in its second week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Flash (2023). The theatrical version of the DC Comics character first appeared in a cameo in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice in 2016, but an announced solo film was delayed several times, including by the Warner Bros. Discovery merger in April 2022, as well as a series of high-profile arrests for the film's star, Ezra Miller, and the announced reboot of the entire DCEU franchise. Unfortunately, the many delays and controversies seem to have affected audience enthusiasm for The Flash, which has a global haul of just $268 million so far. Given the reported budget of $200 million or more, it is estimated that the film will lose some $200 million and go down in history as a major box office bomb. This week, The Flash sold 17% as many Blu-ray units as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with an HD share of 61% and 19% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And debuting in third place on both charts is Star Trek: Picard - The Final Season (2023). The third and final season of the continuing adventures of Jean-Luc Picard earned high praise from fans. In addition to having Patrick Stewart in the title role as always, brought back even more beloved characters from Star Trek: The Next Generation (along with the actors who played them) than the first two seasons. This week, Star Trek: Picard - The Final Season sold 11% as many Blu-ray units as Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, with an HD share of 56%. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the simultaneously released Star Trek: Picard - The Complete Series (2020-2023) Blu-ray box set had an even stronger HD share of 77%. A 4K UHD release was not made available.

Elsewhere on the charts, Paramount's Sleepy Hollow (1999), which was released on 4K UHD this week, came in at No. 5 on the Blu-ray-only chart and handily topped the UHD Market Share chart for the week, with 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. The aforementioned Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse / Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse bundle came in at No. 6, with the 2018 film re-entering the chart at No. 11. Also in the top twenty Blu-rays was the Criterion Collection release of The Princess Bride at No. 12, which also saw a 4K UHD upgrade this week. Coming in at No. 15 was Paramount's Star Trek: Picard - The Complete Series, and finally, Sony's Matilda (1996) and Shout Factory's Night of the Comet, two more films with 4K UHD upgrades this week, came in at Nos. 16 and 18, respectively.
