This Week on Blu-ray: September 11-17

For the week of September 11th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment and MGM will release Ben Affleck's Air (2023) starring Matt Damon, Jason Bateman, Ben Affleck, Chris Messina, Viola Davis and Julius Tennon.

Description: From award-winning director Ben Affleck, AIR reveals the game-changing partnership between a then undiscovered Michael Jordan and Nike's fledgling basketball division which revolutionized the world of sports and culture with the Air Jordan brand. Starring Matt Damon, Ben Affleck, Jason Bateman, Chris Messina, Marlon Wayans, Chris Tucker, and Viola Davis.

Warner's Blu-ray of Air contains the film's Dolby Atmos audio.

Also coming from Warner is a 4K UHD upgrade for Eric Radomski, Bruce Timm, Boyd Kirkland, Frank Paur, Dan Riba and Kevin Altieri's Batman: Mask of the Phantasm (1993), starring the voices of Kevin Conroy, Dana Delany, Hart Bochner, Stacy Keach, Abe Vigoda and Dick Miller. Newly remastered from a 4K scan of the original camera negative, Warner presents Batman: Mask of the Phantasm in its original theatrical aspect ratio of 1.85:1, with HDR and a choice of either a new DTS-HD MA 5.1 track or original DTS-HD MA 2.0 audio. Also new for this release is the 26-minute featurette Kevin Conroy: I Am the Knight. In addition to standard packaging, a Best Buy Exclusive with Comic Book will also be available. Finally from Warner comes a Blu-ray box set for Rick and Morty: The Complete Seasons 1-6 (2013-2022). The six-disc set collects all six seasons ahead of the premiere of the seventh season.

New this week from Paramount Home Media Distribution is a Blu-ray for Poker Face: Season One (2023), starring Natasha Lyonne.

Description: The star-studded mystery, directed by Rian Johnson (Knives Out), follows four-time Emmy® Nominee Natasha Lyonne's "Charlie," who has an extraordinary ability to determine when someone is lying. She hits the road with her Plymouth Barracuda and with every stop encounters a new cast of characters and strange crimes she can't help but solve.

Also coming from Paramount is a 4K UHD upgrade for Gary Fleder's Kiss the Girls (1996), starring Morgan Freeman, Ashley Judd, Cary Elwes, Tony Goldwyn, Billy Blanks and Tatyana Ali. The film will make its worldwide debut on 4K UHD via this release.

New this week on Blu-ray from Lionsgate Home Entertainment is Samuel Bodin's Cobweb (2023), starring Lizzy Caplan, Antony Starr, Cleopatra Coleman, Steffanie Busey and Woody Norman.

Description: Eight-year-old Peter is plagued by a mysterious, constant tap, tap from inside his bedroom wall – a tapping that his parents insist is all in his imagination. As Peter's fear intensifies, he believes that his parents (Lizzy Caplan and Antony Starr) could be hiding a terrible, dangerous secret and questions their trust. Lionsgate's Blu-ray of Cobweb contains the extras Becoming "The Girl", Through the Eyes of a Child and A Primal Fear.

Also new on Blu-ray from Lionsgate is Adele Lim's Joy Ride (2023), starring Stephanie Hsu, David Denman, Ashley Park, Desmond Chiam, Annie Mumolo and Chris Pang.

New from Kino Lorber is a Blu-ray for Michel Hazanavicius' Final Cut (Coupez!) (2022), starring Romain Duris, Bérénice Bejo, Grégory Gadebois, Finnegan Oldfield, Matilda Anna Ingrid Lutz and Sébastien Chassagne.

Description: The opening night selection of last year's Cannes Film Festival was this wacky horror comedy, a remake of Shin'ichirô Ueda's cult hit One Cut of the Dead. It follows a director (Romain Duris, L'Auberge Espagnole) making a live, single-take, low-budget zombie flick in which the cast and crew, one by one, actually turn into zombies. Oscar® winner Michel Hazanavicius (The Artist) milks the film's hilarious and meta-to-the-max premise for all it's worth, while also crafting a sly love letter to the art of filmmaking. What's on screen unfolds in typical cheesy B-movie fashion, while the off-screen hijinks offer a celebration of the unpredictable and collaborative nature of film sets. Featuring a hysterically unhinged turn by Oscar® nominee Berenice Bejo (The Artist) and serving up blood-soaked high farce par excellence, Final Cut revels in its affectionate embrace of goofy genre fun.

Also coming from Kino is a Blu-ray for Kevin Reynolds' The Beast (1988), starring George Dzundza, Jason Patric, Steven Bauer, Stephen Baldwin, Don Harvey and Kabir Bedi. Kino's Blu-ray contains a VHS trailer as an extra.

Finally from Kino is a Blu-ray for James Foley's After Dark, My Sweet (1990), starring Jason Patric, Rachel Ward, Rocky Giordani, Bruce Dern, Mike Hagerty, Corey Carrier. Kino presents After Dark, My Sweet from a new 2K scan of an interpositive. Extras include filmmaker commentary, interviews with actors Jason Patric and Bruce Dern and a newly remastered theatrical trailer.

New on Blu-ray from Well Go USA is a Blu-ray for Jared Moshe's Aporia, starring iJudy Greer, Edi Gathegi and Payman Maadi.

New on Blu-ray from Cohen Media Group is Emmanuel Carrère's Between Two Worlds (Ouistreham), starringJuliette Binoche, Hélène Lambert, Léa Carne, Evelyne Porée, Patricia Prieur and Emily Madeleine.

Description: Academy Award-winner Juliette Binoche stars as Marianne Winckler, a well-known author, goes to live in northern France to research for her new book on the subject of job insecurity. Without revealing her true identity, she gets hired as a cleaner, working with a group of other women. In this new role, she experiences financial instability and social invisibility first-hand. But she also discovers mutual assistance and solidarity, strong bonds shared by these behind-the-scenes working women.

Finally for new releases this week, Music Box Films has a Blu-ray for Emanuele Crialese's L'immensità, starring Penélope Cruz, Vincenzo Amato, Luana Giuliani, Patrizio Francioni, María Chiara Goretti and Penélope Nieto Conti.

Description: Clara (Penélope Cruz) and her emotionally distant husband Felice (Vincenzo Amato) relocate to Rome to raise a family. Even though the paint is fresh, and the appliances are new, the crushing expectations around marriage, desire, and gender in the early 1970s remain as traditional as ever. Their children Andrew (played by newcomer Luana Giuliani), Gino, and Diana are likewise poised at a precipice, on the verge of adolescence, with nothing but their imaginations to defuse family tensions. Turning to catalog titles, the Criterion Collection have a 4K UHD upgrade for Nicolas Roeg's Walkabout (1971), starring Jenny Agutter, Luc Roeg, David Gulpilil, John Meillon, Robert McDarra and Peter Carver. Sourced from a new 4K master, Criterion presents Walkabout with Dolby Vision HDR and LPCM Mono audio. Extras include Criterion's audio commentary with Nicolas Roeg and Jenny Agutter, while a Blu-ray copy also features legacy video extras, including interviews with Luc Roeg and Jenny Agutter, the documentary Gulpilil—One Red Blood (2002) and a trailer for the film. Coming to Blu-ray from Arrow Video is Sammo Kam-Bo Hung's The Prodigal Son (敗家仔) (1981), starring Sammo Kam-Bo Hung, Biao Yuen, Frankie Chan, Ching-Ying Lam, Fat Chung and Dick Wei. Sourced from new 2K masters, Arrow presents The Prodigal Son in both the original Hong Kong "Theatrical Release Presentation" and the "Home Release Presentation", with lossless Cantonese, Mandarin, and English mono audio options. Extras include two audio commentaries: One by martial arts cinema expert Frank Djeng and actor Bobby Samuels and another by action cinema experts Mike Leeder and Arne Venema, Wing Chun 101: An interview with Wing Chun sifu Alex Richter, several archival interviews and original theatrical trailers. Also included is a double-sided fold-out poster, reversible artwork and an illustrated collector's booklet.

Also coming from Arrow is a new Blu-ray and 4K UHD upgrade for Dennis Iliadis' The Last House on the Left (2009), starring Tony Goldwyn, Monica Potter, Sara Paxton, Garret Dillahunt, Aaron Paul and Spencer Treat Clark. Arrow presents The Last House on the Left in its theatrical cut on 4K UHD, with Dolby Vision HDR and DTS-HD MA 5.1. A second Blu-ray disc features the unrated cut of the film in 1080p, while new extras include a director's introduction, commentary by David Flint and Adrian Smith, as well as interviews with actors Sara Paxton and Garret Dillahunt, along with screenwriter Carl Ellsworth and producer Jonathan Craven. Legacy extras include an archival featurette, deleted scenes and a theatrical trailer. Also included is a double-sided fold-out poster, reversible artwork and an illustrated collector's booklet. Sourced from a new 4K scan of the original camera negative, MVD Visual presents Ghoulies with DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono audio and Dolby Vision HDR on the 4K UHD disc. Extras include two archival audio commentaries with director Luca Bercovici, a director's introduction, a making of featurette, interviews with Bercovici, actor Scott Thomson and editor Ted Nicolaou, as well as theatrical trailers for both Ghoulies and Ghoulies II. Finally this week, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment has two 4K UHD upgrades coming. First is Chris Miller and Raman Hui's Shrek the Third (2007), starring the voices of Mike Myers, Eddie Murphy, Cameron Diaz, Antonio Banderas, Julie Andrews and John Cleese. Universal presents Shrek the Third with DTS:X audio and HDR. An included Blu-ray copy features deleted scenes, featurettes and more.

Then from Universal is a 4K UHD upgrade for Jeff Wadlow's Kick-Ass 2 (2013), starring Aaron Taylor-Johnson, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, Chloë Grace Moretz, Jim Carrey, Clark Duke and Morris Chestnut. Universal presents Kick-Ass 2 with DTS:X audio and HDR. An included Blu-ray copy features filmmaker commentary, an alternate opening, extended scenes, a multi-part making of featurette and more. In addition to standard packaging, a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook will also be available.
