UPDATE: This article has been amended in line with its source. Originally, Jaws 2 was listed as No. 19 of the top twenty Blu-rays and No. 4 on the UHD Market Share chart, despite its 4K UHD edition having a release date of July 4th. Jaws 2 has since been removed from the charts for this week and the charts have been adjusted accordingly.

For the week that ended on July 1st, Walt Disney Home Entertainment and 20th Century Studios' Avatar: The Way of Water remained on top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its second week. Finally released in December 2022, Avatar: The Way of Water found a theatrical marketplace that had changed dramatically from when Avatar took cinemas worldwide by storm in December 2009 and then kickstarted the Blu-ray 3D format on home video. Ultimately, while Avatar: The Way of Water didn't quite reach the incredible box office heights of its predecessor, the sequel has been an unmitigated success. It topped the domestic box office from its release week in December 2022 all the way until February 2023, and while its domestic opening weekend was "only" some $134 million, it ended its domestic run with an impressive $684 million. But as with Avatar, the film actually made the bulk of its money--over 70% of it--internationally, eventually grossing over $1.6 billion outside the US and Canada. When all was said and done, Avatar: The Way of Water had become not just the highest-grossing-film of 2022 (by a margin of almost $1 billion), but the third-highest-grossing film of all time. This week, Avatar: The Way of Water had an HD share of 53%, with 8% of units sold from the Blu-ray 3D format and 19% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Remaining in second place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Lionsgate Home Entertainment's John Wick: Chapter 4. The fourth installment in the John Wick series saw the titular hitman in yet more outrageous gun battles and fight sequences, as he takes revenge on the High Table over a whopping 169 minutes of nearly non-stop action. The film opened in March 2023 to near-universal acclaim and topped the box office on its opening weekend, with over $73 million. So far, the film has made over $187 million domestically and over $427 million globally. This week, John Wick: Chapter 4 sold 97% as many Blu-ray units as Avatar: The Way of Water, with an HD share of 68% and 20% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And remaining in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's The Super Mario Bros. Movie. Released theatrically in April 2023, the animated adaptation of the hugely popular Nintendo video game series received mixed reviews, but smashed several box office records, including taking only a week to become the highest-grossing film based on a video game and becoming the highest-grossing film of 2023, with over $573 million domestically and a staggering $1.3 billion worldwide. This week, The Super Mario Bros. Movie sold 83% as many Blu-ray units as Avatar: The Way of Water, with an HD share of 57% and 12% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Warner Bros Home Entertainment's Evil Dead Rise was the week's top new release, coming in at No. 4 on both charts, with an HD share of 73% and 30% of units sold from the 4K UHD format, while the studio's 4K UHD upgrade for National Lampoon's Vacation sent that film to No. 6 on the Blu-ray-only chart and topped the UHD Market Share chart for the week, with over 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. Outside the top ten, Shout Factory's 4K UHD upgrade of Creepshow (1982) debuted at No. 11 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Big George Foreman debuted at No. 17. Finally, Arrow Video's 4K UHD upgrade of Mallrats came in at No. 19.
