ClassicFlix has provided a promotional video for its new restoration of Michael Curtiz's The Proud Rebel (1958), starring Alan Ladd, Olivia de Havilland, Dean Jagger, David Ladd, and Cecil Kellaway. A Blu-ray release is expected to arrive on the market later this year.
Description: Confederate veteran John Chandler (Alan Ladd) returns from defeat in war to find his home razed, his wife dead and his young son, David (David Ladd), traumatized and rendered mute. Desperate to cure the boy, Chandler takes David to a small town in Illinois where he hopes to find a doctor. But, soon after the pair arrives, Chandler finds himself framed for assault -- and forced to choose between serving hard time and working for struggling local farmer Linnett Moore (Olivia de Havilland).
Label notes on the restoration: The Proud Rebel scan we have acquired is in 4K and from an IB Tech print. It has some inherent flaws, but will be, by far, the best presentation of this beloved western once we're done restoring it. The clip is from our first restoration pass and it shows the relative sharpness of the material. The clean up thus far has been very minimal and there is a long way to go. No color grading was done on the clip, either.
Extras will include an interview with David Ladd shot this year and conducted by Alan Rode. Rode will also be doing an audio commentary for the film.
