Blu-ray Sales: April 2-8: Plane Still Flying in Second Week

For the week that ended on April 8th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Plane remained on top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its second week. The latest Gerard Butler action vehicle featured the star as a pilot who must team up with a prisoner after crash landing in hostile territory. It opened in January to mixed reviews, but has grossed over $32 million domestically and over $52 million globally so far. This week, Plane had an HD share of 58%, with 12% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Moving up a spot from last week is Crunchyroll's Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero. The twenty-first feature film in the venerable Dragon Ball franchise opened in Japan in June 2022 and topped the box office in its opening weekend. In the US, the film opened two months later and accomplished the same feat, opening to strong reviews and over $21 million on it's way to over $38 million in the United Sates. The film has grossed over $86 million worldwide. This week, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero sold 81% as many Blu-ray units as Plane, with a perfect HD share of 100%.

An returning to third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. The sequel to 2011's Puss in Boots concerns the feline hero's quest for to find magic star which can restore the eight of his nine lives he has used up. Over a decade on from the first film, and featuring a notably different computer-generated animation style to the other films in the Shrek franchise, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish opened in December 2022 to positive reviews. Despite finishing second on its opening weekend, behind the gargantuan Avatar: The Way of Water, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish has legged it to over $185 million domestically and over $479 million globally. The film was also nominated for the Oscar for Best Animated Feature Film at the Academy Awards. This week, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish sold 55% as many Blu-ray units as Plane, with an HD share of 41% and 4% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Star Trek: The Next Generation Motion Picture Collection (1994-2002) an eight-disc box set that contains the 4K UHD premieres of Star Trek: Generations, Star Trek: First Contact, Star Trek: Insurrection and Star Trek: Nemesis, came in at No. 6 on the Blu-ray-only chart. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Maltese Falcon (1941) and Cool Hand Luke, which received 4K UHD releases this week, came in at Nos. 7 and 11, respectively, while also topping the UHD Market Share chart for the week, with 98% and 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. Crunchyroll's Cowboy Bebop: 25th Anniversary Edition came in at No. 17 and Paramount's individual release of Star Trek: First Contact came in at No. 19.
