Blu-ray Sales: March 19-25: Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero Edges Out M3GAN

For the week that ended on March 25th, Crunchyroll's Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero managed to stay on top of the Blu-ray-only chart, but only just. The twenty-first feature film in the venerable Dragon Ball franchise opened in Japan in June 2022 and topped the box office in its opening weekend. In the US, the film opened two months later and accomplished the same feat, opening to strong reviews and over $21 million on it's way to over $38 million in the United Sates. The film has grossed over $86 million worldwide. This week, Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero had a perfect HD share of 100%.

Debuting in second place on the Blu-ray-only chart is the week's top disc seller, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's M3GAN. The sci-fi horror, about an android that bonds with a young girl and becomes self-aware, killing anyone who comes between them, was an unexpected success when it released in January 2023, earning critical praise for its blend of horror and comedy. It was also a box office success, grossing over $95 million domestically and over $176 million worldwide on a budget of just $12 million. Around the same time as the film opened, it was revealed that it had required re-shoots to secure a PG-13 rating, which led to the emergence on Blu-ray of an Unrated cut, which adds more violence and strong language. This week, M3GAN sold 98% as many Blu-ray units as Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, with an HD share of 51%.

And debuting in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Paramount Home Media Distribution's Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season One. One of many Star Trek series produced by Paramount in recent years, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is a spin-off which centers on original Star Trek characters Captain Christopher Pike, Spock, and Number One as they appeared in Star Trek: Discovery Season Two. While the series was released on Blu-ray this week, a Limited Edition 4K UHD SteelBook is set to be released on May 16th, 2023. This week, Star Trek: Strange New Worlds - Season One sold 65% as many Blu-ray units as Dragon Ball Super: Super Hero, with an HD share of 58%.

Elsewhere on the charts, Paramount's Babylon (2022) debuted at No. 4 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while Dragonslayer, which Paramount debuted on Blu-ray and 4K UHD this week, came in at No. 5 on the Blu-ray-only chart (with 74% of units sold from the 4K UHD format) and 101 Films' Left Behind: Rise of the Antichrist debuted at No. 9. Outside the top ten, the Criterion Collection's Inland Empire came in at No. 12, while Crunchyroll's Jujutsu Kaisen 0 came in at No.13. Finally, at No. 15 on the chart, Warner and MGM released a standalone 4K UHD release of Rocky IV, completing their current run of Best Buy Exclusive 4K UHD SteelBooks for the series, with over 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
