Blu-ray Sales: January 22-28: It's a Violent Night for Black Adam

For the week that ended on January 28th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Violent Night topped both the the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The action-comedy, where Santa Claus must protect a wealthy family after they are taken hostage, opened in December 2022 to mostly positive reviews. So far, the film has grossed over $49 million domestically and over $75 million worldwide. This week, Violent Night had an HD share of 60%.

Dropping to second place on both charts in its fourth week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Black Adam. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson had been tapped to play the DC Comics antihero as long ago as 2007 and confirmed his involvement in 2014, back when Black Adam was supposed to be part of Shazam!. In 2017, the character was split off into his own film with Johnson as the star, but filming was delayed, first by Johnson's busy schedule, and then by the coronavirus pandemic, such that Black Adam took until April 2021 to begin filming. Upon release in October 2022, the film grossed over $67 million on its opening weekend, the highest opening of Johnson's career. However, mixed reviews from critics and audiences alike led to the film ultimately grossing just over $168 million domestically and over $392 million globally. This week, Black Adam sold 61% as many Blu-ray units as Violent Night, with an HD share of 52% and 13% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And debuting in third place is Lionsgate Home Entertainment's The Dentist Collection (1996-1998) a two-disc set which contains The Dentist (1996) and its sequel, The Dentist 2: Brace Yourself (1998) and is part of Lionsgate's Vestron Video Collector's Series of Blu-rays. This week, The Dentist Collection sold 57% as many Blu-ray units as Violent Night, with a cavity-free HD share of 100%.

Elsewhere on the charts, Liongate's 4K UHD release of Belly, which was available is both standard and Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook editions, pushed that film into the top ten Blu-rays at No. 6 and easily topped the UHD Market Share chart, with 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
