For the week that ended on December 24th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Top Gun: Maverick topped both the the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the eighth week in a row, tying Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Frozen, which was on top for eight consecutive weeks back in 2014. Originally announced in 2010, the sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster
Top Gun saw several delays, including the death of director Tony Scott in 2012. When filming finally commenced in 2018, a projected release in June 2019 was delayed a year in order to complete the film's action sequences. That process would be further drawn out by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, which would see the film's release date moved several more times, before it finally opened in May 2022. After a 36-year wait, the result was an enormous success.
Top Gun: Maverick opened to rave reviews and over $160 million over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, going on to make over $718 million domestically and even more internationally at over $770 million and counting, for a running total of over $1.4 billion worldwide. In June, the film passed $800 million to become the highest-grossing film in Tom Cruise's career, while later that month, it became only the second film since 2019 to cross the $1 billion mark, following Sony's
Spider-Man: No Way Home. Currently,
Top Gun: Maverick stands as the highest-grossing film of 2022. This week,
Top Gun: Maverick had an HD share of 66% and 25% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season. The prequel to HBO's hit fantasy series
Game of Thrones (2011-2019), was budgeted and shot like a Hollywood blockbuster film, reportedly costing almost $20 million per episode, or $200 million for all 10 episodes. The financial gamble appears to have paid off, since
House of the Dragon drew some 10 million viewers in the US on its premiere night alone. The season received positive reviews and has been nominated for two Golden Globes, including for Best Television Series – Drama. This week,
House of the Dragon: The Complete First Season sold 40% as many Blu-ray units as
Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 61% and 26% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
The Woman King. The PG-13-rated action drama, set in the 19th century and starring Viola Davis as the fictional head of a real life all-female warrior group in the West African kingdom of Dahomey, opened to positive reviews and topped the box office on its way to over $67 million domestically and over $92 million globally. The film also garnered Davis a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama at the upcoming Golden Globes. This week,
The Woman King sold 26% as many Blu-ray units as
Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 50% and 9% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
