For the week that ended on December 17th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Top Gun: Maverick topped both the the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the seventh week in a row, the longest since Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Frozen, which was on top for eight consecutive weeks back in 2014. Originally announced in 2010, the sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster Top Gun saw several delays, including the death of director Tony Scott in 2012. When filming finally commenced in 2018, a projected release in June 2019 was delayed a year in order to complete the film's action sequences. That process would be further drawn out by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, which would see the film's release date moved several more times, before it finally opened in May 2022. After a 36-year wait, the result was an enormous success. Top Gun: Maverick opened to rave reviews and over $160 million over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, going on to make over $718 million domestically and even more internationally at over $770 million and counting, for a running total of over $1.4 billion worldwide. In June, the film passed $800 million to become the highest-grossing film in Tom Cruise's career, while later that month, it became only the second film since 2019 to cross the $1 billion mark, following Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Currently, Top Gun: Maverick stands as the highest-grossing film of the year. This week, Top Gun: Maverick had an HD share of 62% and 22% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Debuting in second place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's The Woman King. The PG-13-rated action drama, set in the 19th century and starring Viola Davis as the fictional head of a real life all-female warrior group in the West African kingdom of Dahomey, opened to positive reviews and topped the box office on its way to over $67 million domestically and over $92 million globally. The film also garnered Davis a Golden Globe nomination for Best Actress in a Motion Picture – Drama at the upcoming Golden Globes. This week, The Woman King sold 37% as many Blu-ray units as Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 52% and 13% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And debuting in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Sony's Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile. Adapted from the stories of author Bernard Waber, the family film stars Shawn Mendes as the voice of the titular singing reptile, and opened to mixed reviews in October, taking over $46 million domestically and over $87 million globally. This week, Lyle, Lyle, Crocodile sold 31% as many Blu-ray units as Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 42% and 2% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's 4K UHD release of Highlander propelled that film back into the top ten Blu-rays at No. 4, with the new edition also topping the UHD Market Share chart for the week, with over 98% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Ticket to Paradise and Paramount's Smile debuted at Nos. 5 and 6, respectively. Also cracking the top ten Blu-rays was Lionsgate's new Vestron Video Collector's Series release, Silent Night, Deadly Night Collection (1989-1991), a three-disc set which contains Silent Night, Deadly Night 3: Better Watch Out! (1989), Silent Night, Deadly Night 4: Initiation (1990) and Silent Night, Deadly Night 5: The Toy Maker (1991). Finally, Shout Factory's 4K UHD release of Coraline also performed well, with 90% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
