Blu-ray Sales: December 4-10: Top Gun: Maverick Ties Sonic with Six Weeks on Top

For the week that ended on December 10th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Top Gun: Maverick topped both the the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the sixth week in a row, tying the longest record since Paramount's Sonic the Hedgehog spent six weeks on top in May and June 2020. Originally announced in 2010, the sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster Top Gun saw several delays, including the death of director Tony Scott in 2012. When filming finally commenced in 2018, a projected release in June 2019 was delayed a year in order to complete the film's action sequences. That process would be further drawn out by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, which would see the film's release date moved several more times, before it finally opened in May 2022. After a 36-year wait, the result was an enormous success. Top Gun: Maverick opened to rave reviews and over $160 million over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, going on to make over $718 million domestically and even more internationally at over $770 million and counting, for a running total of over $1.4 billion worldwide. In June, the film passed $800 million to become the highest-grossing film in Tom Cruise's career, while later that month, it became only the second film since 2019 to cross the $1 billion mark, following Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Currently, Top Gun: Maverick stands as the highest-grossing film of the year. This week, Top Gun: Maverick had an HD share of 57% and 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. As noted last week, Paramount's Top Gun 2-Movie Collection made the top ten Blu-rays, moving up to No. 4 and up to No. 2 on the UHD Market Share chart this week, with 70% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Debuting in second place on both charts is Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Clerks III. The second sequel to Kevin Smith's acclaimed 1994 film received mixed reviews and made just over $4.7 million--almost all domestically--on a reported $7 million budget, but Smith knows his films are popular on home video and to that end, he stacked the home video release with extras, including a group audio commentary, two feature-length behind-the-scenes documentaries and half an hour of deleted scenes, amongst other extras. A 4K UHD edition was also released as a Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook, and despite being a retailer exclusive, it managed to crack the top ten on the UHD Market Share chart. This week, Clerks III sold 50% as many Blu-ray units as Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 79% and 21% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And arriving in third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Paramount's Pulp Fiction, which the studio released in a hotly-anticipated 4K UHD edition that duly topped the UHD Market Share chart, even coming in at No. 6 on the overall packaged media chart. This week, Pulp Fiction sold 40% as many Blu-ray units as Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 99% and 98% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Paramount's Star Trek: Discovery - Season Four debuted at No. 6 on the Blu-ray-only chart, while another new release, RLJE Films' Mad God, just made it into the top twenty Blu-rays, coming in at No. 20.
