For the week that ended on November 5th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Top Gun: Maverick topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. Originally announced in 2010, the sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster
Top Gun saw several delays, including the death of director Tony Scott in 2012. When filming finally commenced in 2018, a projected release in June 2019 was delayed a year in order to complete the film's action sequences. That process would be further drawn out by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, which would see the film's release date moved several more times, before it finally opened in May 2022. After a 36-year wait, the result was an enormous success.
Top Gun: Maverick opened to rave reviews and over $160 million over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, going on to make over $716 million domestically and even more internationally at over $770 million and counting, for a running total of over $1.4 billion worldwide. In June, the film passed $800 million to become the highest-grossing film in Tom Cruise's career, while later that month, it became only the second film since 2019 to cross the $1 billion mark, following Sony's
Spider-Man: No Way Home. Currently,
Top Gun: Maverick stands as the highest-grossing film of the year. This week,
Top Gun: Maverick had a fantastic HD share of 65% and 25% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Such is the power of
Top Gun: Maverick that Paramount's
Top Gun 2-Movie Collection took second place on both charts. This week,
Top Gun 2-Movie Collection sold 13% as many Blu-ray units as
Top Gun: Maverick did on its own, with a perfect HD share of 100% and 55% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
And dropping to third place on both charts in its second week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Nope. The third feature from director Jordan Peele after
Get Out and
Us centers on a family-run horse ranch in California where strange things are happening in the skies above.
Nope opened in July to positive reviews and topped the box office on its opening weekend with over $44 million, on its way to a domestic total of over $123 million and a global total of over $170 million. This week,
Nope sold 4% as many Blu-ray units as
Top Gun: Maverick, with an HD share of 61% and 23% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, the major studios found success on the Blu-ray-only chart with their 4K UHD upgrades. Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation came in at No. 6, Paramount's
The Running Man came in at No. 8, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Starship Troopers, which was re-released with Dolby Vision and new bonus content for its 25th anniversary, came in at No. 9, while Warner's
A Christmas Story and
Elf came in at Nos.10 and 11, respectively.
