This Week on Blu-ray: October 31-November 6

For the week of October 31st, Paramount Home Media Distribution will release Joseph Kosinski's Top Gun: Maverick, starring Tom Cruise, Val Kilmer, Miles Teller, Jennifer Connelly and Bashir Salahuddin. Originally announced in 2010, the sequel to the 1986 action blockbuster Top Gun saw several delays, including the death of director Tony Scott in 2012. When filming finally commenced in 2018, a projected release in June 2019 was delayed a year in order to complete the film's action sequences. That process would be further drawn out by the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic, which would see the film's release date moved several more times, before it finally opened in May 2022. After a 36-year wait, the result was an enormous success. Top Gun: Maverick opened to rave reviews and over $160 million over the Memorial Day holiday weekend, going on to make over $716 million domestically (so far) and even more internationally at over $768 million and counting, for a running total of over $1.4 billion worldwide. In June, the film passed $800 million to become the highest-grossing film in Tom Cruise's career, while later that month, it became only the second film since 2019 to cross the $1 billion mark, following Sony's Spider-Man: No Way Home. Currently, Top Gun: Maverick stands as the highest-grossing film of the year.

Paramount's Blu-ray and 4K UHD releases of Top Gun: Maverick include the film's Dolby Atmos audio, while the 4K UHD disc also includes Dolby Vision HDR. Extras include four featurettes and two music videos, but the 4K UHD disc also includes a lengthy masterclass with Tom Cruise from the Cannes Film Festival. In addition to standard packaging, a Dual Format SteelBook and a Walmart Exclusive Dual Format SteelBook with Exclusive Art on a Lenticular Magnet will also be available. Reviewer Martin Liebman is hugely impressed, giving perfect scores to the 4K UHD picture and sound quality and saying in part: "The picture is particularly bold and sharp, more so than the companion Blu-ray, which is itself a master class for that format. Here, however, there is no mistaking a fairly sizeable boost to sharpness and there is no missing the gains to object clarity...The picture is a dazzling display of intricate, clear detailing". Of the Atmos audio, Liebman goes on to say that "The entire thing is a marvel, and it nearly defies review. It's simply perfectly balanced through the full range, from subtle sound cues to thunderous bass...Jets scream across the stage with pinpoint placement and seamless movement one end to another. Gunfire late in the film is terrifyingly and dangerously intense...It just doesn't get better than this". For full disc breakdowns, read Martin's 4K UHD review and Blu-ray review.

Also coming this week from Paramount is a 4K UHD upgrade for Paul Michael Glaser's The Running Man (1987), starring Arnold Schwarzenegger, Maria Conchita Alonso, Yaphet Kotto, Jim Brown, Jesse Ventura and Erland van Lidth.
