For the week that ended on August 20th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Jurassic World: Dominion topped both the Blu-ray only and overall packaged media charts. The third film the
Jurassic World trilogy (and sixth film in the
Jurassic Park franchise) began filming in February 2020 for a June 2021 release. However, in March 2020, filming was put on hold when the coronavirus pandemic struck much of the Western world. Filming would eventually resume in July 2020 with the aid of an entire hotel that Universal rented for the production to use as a "bubble", making
Jurassic World: Dominion one of the first films to resume production after the pandemic began. Filming was eventually completed in November 2020 and post-production meant that it was not completed until November 2021. Along with the return of Jeff Goldblum as Ian Malcolm, The film also marked the return of actors Sam Neil and Laura Dern as paleontologists Alan Grant and Ellie Sattler, the two leads in the original
Jurassic Park, making
Jurassic World: Dominion the first time in almost thirty years that all three characters had been in the same film. Despite this casting coup, reviews for the film have been largely negative, but that hasn't stopped it from grossing over $374 million domestically and an impressive $610 million internationally, for a grand total of over $984 million worldwide so far. This week,
Jurassic World: Dominion had an HD share of 66% and 20% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to second place on both charts is the previous week's champion, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Sonic the Hedgehog 2. The sequel to the surprise 2020 hit film was shot in 2021 and opened in April 2022 to generally positive reviews. The film topped the box office in its opening weekend with over $72 million and ended up grossing over $190 million domestically and over $401 million worldwide so far, already more than its predecessor made in total. This week,
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 sold 12% as many Blu-ray units as
Jurassic World: Dominion, with an HD share of 49% and 9% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in third place on both charts is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
The Black Phone. Based on a short story by Joe Hill, (the eldest son of Stephen King), director Scott Derickson's R-rated thriller opened to generally positive reviews in late June and has made over $88 million so far in the fairly crowded summer film season, with a global total of over $155 million so far. This week,
The Black Phone sold 9% as many Blu-ray units as
Jurassic World: Dominion, with an HD share of 59%.
Elsewhere on the charts, two Collector's Edition 4K UHD releases from Shout Factory,
Child's Play (1988) and
Red Dawn (1984), boosted the two films into the top twenty Blu-rays at No. 7 and No. 11, respectively. Both films also made the Top Five UHD Blu-ray Sellers chart for the week, where
Red Dawn took the top spot, with 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
