For the week that ended on August 13th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 debuted on top of the Blu-ray only and overall packaged media charts. The sequel to the surprise 2020 hit film was shot in 2021 and opened in April 2022 to generally positive reviews. The film topped the box office in its opening weekend with over $72 million and ended up grossing over $190 million domestically and over $401 million worldwide so far, already more than its predecessor made in total. This week,
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 had an HD share of 59% and 22% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to second place on both charts in its third week is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The 28th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe finds the titular Doctor having to protect a teenager, who has an uncontrolled capability to travel the multiverse, from Scarlet Witch, who wants to use the girl for her own selfish ends. The film was shifted several times due to the coronavirus pandemic and the scheduling of Marvel's Phase Four series of films, jumping from 2021 all the way to May 2022. However, that didn't dampen enthusiasm, as the film eventually opened to a terrific $187 million in its first weekend, eventually amassing over $411 million domestically and over $954 million worldwide so far, becoming the second-highest-grossing film of 2022, behind only Paramount Pictures'
Top Gun: Maverick. This week,
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness sold 33% as many Blu-ray units as
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with an HD share of 60% and 21% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
In third place on the Blu-ray-only chart is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Heat, which received a 4K UHD release this week. The hotly anticipated 4K UHD release of Michael Mann's crime epic, which famously marked the first time screen icons Pacino and De Niro shared scenes in the same film, has finally arrived after being rumored for many months. Disney's 4K UHD disc uses the Director's Definitive Edition 4K master of the film, which was previously issued on Blu-ray in 2017, but now includes HDR, along with DTS-HD MA 5.1 audio. The three-disc set also includes the two Blu-rays from the 2017 edition. This week,
Heat sold 23% as many Blu-ray units as
Sonic the Hedgehog 2, with an HD share of 99% and 95% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
Men debuted on the Blu-ray-only chart at No. 8, while Paramount's new 4K UHD release of
Event Horizon landed that film at No. 10 on the Blu-ray-only chart and also topped the UHD Market Share chart, with 98% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
