Blu-ray Sales: June 12-18: Morbius Tops the Charts on Debut

For the week that ended on June 18th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Morbius topped the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. One of several Marvel Comics properties connected to Spider-Man, Morbius was an attempt to provide the titular character, who is a Vampire-like villain in the comics, with the opportunity to become an antihero. Unfortunately, Morbius, which saw various delays from 2020 all the way to its eventual release in April 2022, has been something of a failure thus far, making less than $74 million domestically and only $136 million worldwide on a budget of $75 million or more, and receiving largely negative reviews. Still, that didn't stop Sony from issuing multiple editions for the film's home video release, including retailer exclusives at Best Buy, Target and Walmart stores. This week, Morbius had an HD share of 67% and 26% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Remaining in second place on both charts this week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Batman. One of many films featuring the iconic DC Comics character to be produced in the last two decades, The Batman serves to reboot the character's solo adventure films, this time in his early years of crime fighting, when he must team up with Lieutenant Jim Gordon to solve a series of murders being committed by The Riddler. Released in March 2022 after being delayed from 2021 thanks to the coronavirus pandemic, The Batman received critical acclaim and grossed over $134 million on its domestic opening weekend. So far, the film has grossed over $770 million worldwide, becoming the the second-highest-grossing film of 2022. This week, The Batman sold 32% as many Blu-ray units as Morbius, with an HD share of 74% and 29% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

And remaining in third place on both charts is Paramount Home Media Distribution's Top Gun. The classic 1986 action film had been slowly rising in the Blu-ray charts as anticipation mounted for its long-awaited and then long-delayed sequel, Top Gun: Maverick, which finally hit theaters at the end of May, some 36 years after the original film. This week, Top Gun sold 21% as many Blu-ray units as Morbius, with an HD share of 51% and 14% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Ambulance debuted at No. 4 on both charts, with an HD share of 63% and 22% of units sold from the 4K UHD format, while Sony's Father Stu which was released on Blu-ray only, debuted at No. 9, with an HD share of 40%. Meanwhile, Paramount Home Media Distribution's Raiders of the Lost Ark topped the UHD Market Share chart for the week after being released individually in SteelBook packaging. Previously, the film had only been available on 4K UHD as part of the Indiana Jones: 4-Movie Collection, which was released in June 2021.
