In the middle of the summer doldrums, the low-budget actioner '12 Rounds', which earned theatrically a mere (and appropriate) $12 million, was the top-selling title on Blu-ray on the week ending July 5 according to Nielsen Videoscan. 'Gran Torino' stood its ground at second place, whereas 'Transformers' dropped from first to third place.

Here is the Blu-ray top 10 (previous-week ranking in parenthesis):
  1. • 12 Rounds
  2. (2) Gran Torino
  3. (1) Transformers
  4. • Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li
  5. • Jonas Brothers: The Concert Experience
  6. (7) Taken
  7. (4) Inkheart
  8. (6) Ghostbusters
  9. (15) The Dark Knight
  10. • The Boondock Saints
The catalog titles 'The Dark Knight' and 'The Boondock Saints' shot up to the top 10, thanks to pricing deals available during the week.

It is worth noting that most of the new releases on DVD didn't have an accompanying BD edition, including the second and third top-selling titles overall (HBO's 'Entourage: The Complete Fifth Season' and Disney's 'Princess Protection Program').

As regards market share, 'Street Fighter: The Legend of Chun-Li' got a very respectable 17%. '12 Rounds' got 13%, which is not bad, but is definitely lower than what we are accustomed to with action titles. Another surprise, but in the opposite direction, was 'Jonas Brothers: The 3-D Concert Experience', for which no less than 11% of total sales were on Blu-ray.

In general, sales volumes were low. Thomas K. Arnold, Home Media Magazine's editorial director, revealed that the total unit sales of '12 Rounds' (including BD and DVD) were fewer than 150,000. Applying the BD market share percentage for that title, it follows that it had Blu-ray sales of around 19,000.

Home Media Magazine has now published the pie chart comparing aggregate unit sales of the top 20 BDs versus the top 20 DVDs. The split for this week is 10% BD: 90% DVD.

Total revenue from BD sales was $10.73 million, up 77.33% from the same week last year, but a low figure for this year – one must go back to the week ended March 8 to find smaller revenue data. In turn, DVD revenue was $144.31 million, down 14.03% year-on-year.

BD accounted for 6.9% of total packaged-media sales revenue.
