Blu-ray Sales: May 1-7: Spider-Man: No Way Home Leaves Disney Turning Red

For the week that ended on May 7th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Spider-Man: No Way Home topped the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the fourth week in a row. The third film in Sony's latest Spider-Man franchise picks up immediately from its predecessor, with Peter Parker having been outed as Spider-Man. In desperation, Peter turns to Doctor Strange to try and find a way to make the public forget his identity, but Strange's spell rips open the multiverse and allows enemies from alternate realities to wreak havoc. Opening in December 2021, Spider-Man: No Way Home heralded a return to the cinema for much of the world after almost two years of worldwide pandemic that saw many people stay out of the cinema since March 2020. With marketing that teased appearances from characters in previous Sony Spider-Man film series, fan excitement was at a fever pitch. Topping the box office in its opening weekend with an incredible $260 million and receiving critical acclaim, Spider-Man: No Way Home went on to make over $804 million at the domestic box office alone and almost $1.9 billion worldwide so far, proving that with the right material at the right time, people will get out to their theaters to enjoy the big screen experience. This week, Spider-Man: No Way Home--which became the top disc seller of 2022 so far--had an HD share of 64% and 15% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Debuting in second place on both charts is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Turning Red. The Pixar film, about a 13-year-old girl who transforms into a giant red panda when she experiences strong emotions, was directed by Domee Shi and is the first film from Pixar to be directed entirely by a woman. Despite critical praise, rising coronavirus cases in early 2022 saw Disney decide to send a Pixar film to streaming in the United States for the third time in a row after Luca and Soul. This week, Turning Red sold 40% as many Blu-ray units as Spider-Man: No Way Home, with an HD share of 58% and 23% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Dropping to third place on both charts in its second week is Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Moonfall. Roland Emmerich's latest disaster film opened in February to negative reviews and made only about 1/3 of its estimated $140 million-plus budget back at the box office. However, the director's films tend to do well on home video, as the first week sales for Moonfall demonstrate. This week, Moonfall sold 25% as many Blu-ray units as Spider-Man: No Way Home, with an HD share of 45% and 26% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Universal's Blacklight debuted at No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart, while Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Constantine: The House of Mystery, a direct-to-video program of four DC Showcase Animated Shorts, debuted at No. 7. A 4K UHD release of Universal's Smokin' Aces pushed that film into the top twenty on the Blu-ray chart (No. 12), while easily topping the UHD market share chart for the week, with 99.6% of of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
