For the week that ended on April 16th, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Spider-Man: No Way Home topped the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its debut. The third film in Sony's latest Spider-Man franchise picks up immediately from its predecessor, with Peter Parker having been outed as Spider-Man. In desperation, Peter turns to Doctor Strange to try and find a way to make the public forget his identity, but Strange's spell rips open the multiverse and allows enemies from alternate realities to wreak havoc. Opening in December 2021,
Spider-Man: No Way Home heralded a return to the cinema for much of the world after almost two years of worldwide pandemic that saw many people stay out of the cinema since March 2020. With marketing that teased appearances from characters in previous Sony Spider-Man film series, fan excitement was at a fever pitch. Topping the box office in its opening weekend with an incredible $260 million and receiving critical acclaim,
Spider-Man: No Way Home went on to make over $804 million at the domestic box office alone and almost $1.9 billion worldwide so far, proving that with the right material at the right time, people will get out to their theaters to enjoy the big screen experience. This week,
Spider-Man: No Way Home had an HD share of 77% and 31% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Such is the power of
Spider-Man: No Way Home that Sony's
Spider-Man: 3-Movie Collection (2017-2021) came in second place on the Blu-ray chart and third place on the overall packaged media chart. The Blu-ray release combines all three films featuring Tom Holland as Spider-Man:
Spider-Man:Homecoming,
Spider-Man: Far From Home and of course,
Spider-Man: No Way Home. This week, the
Spider-Man: 3-Movie Collection sold 6.4% as many Blu-ray units as
Spider-Man: No Way Home, with a perfect HD share of 100%. No 4K UHD edition was made available.
Dropping to third place on the Blu-ray chart in its third week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Sing 2. The sequel to 2016 hit
Sing was originally set to be released on Christmas Day in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic scuppered those plans and saw the studio delay the film, first into July 2021 and then to its final release date of December 22, 2021. Like its predecessor, which holds the record for being the highest-grossing film to never hit the number one spot at the box office,
Sing 2 found the top spot elusive, thanks largely to being released alongside Sony's juggernaut,
Spider-Man: No Way Home. However,
Sing 2 held onto second place at the box office for four straight weeks, amassing over $162 million domestically and over $405 million globally so far, to become the top-grossing animated film of 2021. This week,
Sing 2 sold 6.1% as many Blu-ray units as
Spider-Man: No Way Home, with an HD share of 51% and 7% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Arrow Video's new 4K UHD release of Paul Verhoeven's
RoboCop (1987) came in at No. 6 on the Blu-ray chart and easily topped the UHD market share chart, with 99% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
