For the week of April 24th, Lionsgate Home Entertainment will release Roland Emmerich's Moonfall, starring Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Halle Berry, Michael Peña, and Charlie Plummer.
Studio description: In Moonfall, a mysterious force knocks the Moon from its orbit around Earth and sends it hurtling on a collision course with life as we know it. With mere weeks before impact and the world on the brink of annihilation, NASA executive and former astronaut Jo Fowler (Academy Award® winner Halle Berry) is convinced she has the key to saving us all – but only one astronaut from her past, Brian Harper (Patrick Wilson, "Midway") and a conspiracy theorist K.C. Houseman (John Bradley, "Game of Thrones") believes her. These unlikely heroes will mount an impossible last-ditch mission into space, leaving behind everyone they love, only to find out that our Moon is not what we think it is.
Lionsgate's releases of Moonfall contain the film's Dolby Atmos audio, while the 4K UHD disc additionally includes Dolby Vision HDR. Extras include an audio commentary with Roland Emmerich and Writer / Producer / Composer Harald Kloser, as well as over 90 minutes of video extras. In addition to standard packaging, a Best Buy Exclusive 4K UHD SteelBook and a Target Exclusive Blu-ray with Lenticular Cover will also be available. Reviewer Jeffrey Kauffman has high praise for the 4K UHD disc's A/V quality, calling the picture "beautifully detailed" and awarding perfect 5/5 scores for video and audio quality. Jack and the singer fall in love, but as their relationship grows stronger, Jack grows physically weaker, unable to assassinate the targets he seeks. Soon the scientist discovers the shocking reasons behind Jack's deadly affliction…
Lionsgate's Blu-ray for Expired contains the featurette The Making of Expired: An Ivan Sen Film as an extra.
Turning to catalog titles, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment has a 4K UHD upgrade for Stanley Donen and Gene Kelly's Singin' in the Rain, starring Gene Kelly, Donald O'Connor, Debbie Reynolds, Jean Hagen, Millard Mitchell and Cyd Charisse. Released as the film celebrates its 70th anniversary, Warner's new 4K UHD disc is taken from an existing 4K master, but now with HDR and the addition of the film's original mono audio in lossless DTS-HD MA 2.0. Reviewer Randy Miller says of the picture: "Much like Warner Archive's stunning work on their multitude of Technicolor releases...and, despite a mixture of source elements on board...the fruit of [Warner's] labor is a largely seamless and wholly impressive picture that die-hard fans will be impressed with. Much of this appeal comes from the tasteful use of HDR, which brings many of Singin' in the Rain's more vivid colors to life in new and unexpected ways...The result, at times, is simply stunning." For the full review, including his thoughts on the lossless DTS-HD MA 2.0 Mono track, read Randy's 4K UHD review.
Next, on 4K UHD from the Criterion Collection comes Al Reinert's For All Mankind. Issued on Blu-ray by Criterion back in 2009, on 4K UHD the film is sourced from a new 4K master, with Dolby Vision HDR and a choice of the original 1.33:1 aspect ratio or an alternate 1.85:1 aspect ratio used in theatrical presentations. The 4K UHD also ports over the audio commentary, while the bundled Blu-ray includes Criterion's video extras. Reviewer Svet Atanasov gave the 4K UHD a perfect 5/5 score for picture quality. Read more in Svet's 4K UHD review.
Also from Criterion this week is a Blu-ray for Bertrand Tavernier's 'Round Midnight, starring Dexter Gordon, François Cluzet, Lonette McKee, Herbie Hancock, Frédérique Meininger and Benoît Régent. Criterion's Blu-ray is sourced from a new 4K master, with DTS-HD MA 2.0 Surround and an alternate DTS-HD MA 5.1 track. Supplements include Before Midnight, a 1986 behind-the-scenes documentary, over 50 minutes of new interviews, a 2014 panel discussion with Tavernier and others, and more.
Then from Arrow Video comes a 4K UHD upgrade for Terry Gilliam's 12 Monkeys, starring Bruce Willis, Madeleine Stowe, Brad Pitt, Christopher Plummer, David Morse and Frank Gorshin. Arrow's 4K UHD release builds upon their 2018 remastered Blu-ray release, with a 4K master approved by Gilliam, which now has Dolby Vision HDR. Arrow's extras package is also ported over to this single-disc 4K release, and the first pressing includes a collector's booklet.
