Blu-ray Sales: March 27-April 2: Sing 2 Debuts with a Duet on the Charts

For the week that ended on April 2nd, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Sing 2 took the top two spots on both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The sequel to 2016 hit Sing was originally set to be released on Christmas Day in 2020, but the coronavirus pandemic scuppered those plans and saw the studio delay the film, first into July 2021 and then to its final release date of December 22, 2021. Like its predecessor, which holds the record for being the highest-grossing film to never hit the number one spot at the box office, Sing 2 found the top spot elusive, thanks largely to being released alongside Sony's juggernaut, Spider-Man: No Way Home. However, Sing 2 held onto second place at the box office for four straight weeks, amassing over $162 million domestically and over $396 million globally so far, to become the top-grossing animated film of 2021. This week, Sing 2 had an HD share of 56% and 6% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Meanwhile, second place on both charts went to Universal's Sing: 2 Movie Pack (2016-2021), a two-disc set that collects both films on Blu-ray. This week, the Sing: 2 Movie Pack sold 13% as many Blu-ray units as Sing 2, with an HD share of 44%.

Dropping to third place on the Blu-ray chart is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Matrix Resurrections. Arriving almost 20 years after the previous film in the Matrix franchise, The Matrix Resurrections experienced bad luck when, after starting production in February 2020, the coronavirus pandemic struck and halted filming for six months. Eventually, the film was completed and released in late December 2021, becoming the last film on Warner Bros. 2021 slate and thus, the last film to receive a simultaneous release on the studio's HBO Max streaming service. Despite a theatrical marketplace that had picked up with Sony Pictures' release of Spider-Man: No Way Home the previous week, The Matrix Resurrections underperformed at the box office, debuting in third place with just over $10 million on its opening weekend, and eventually grossing over $37 million domestically and over $156 million globally, against a budget of $190 million. This week, The Matrix Resurrections sold 12% as many Blu-ray units as Sing 2, with an HD share of 57% and 15% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Universal's Marry Me debuted at No. 6 on both charts, selling 8% as many Blu-ray units as Sing 2, with an HD share of 39%.
