Blu-ray Sales: March 20-26: The Godfather Trilogy Makes an Offer You Can't Refuse

For the week that ended on March 26th, Paramount Home Media Distribution's The Godfather Trilogy topped the Blu-ray chart. Celebrating the 50th anniversary of the original film, the entire trilogy has been newly remastered in 4K, with Dolby Vision HDR and Dolby TrueHD 5.1 audio, as well as original mono audio (for the first two films) in Dolby Digital. For the third film, which was re-edited in 2020 to become The Godfather, Coda: The Death of Michael Corleone, both the 1991 cut and the original theatrical version are included on a bonus 4K UHD disc. The 4K UHD discs contain audio commentaries (The Godfather also includes a short new introduction from director Francis Ford Coppola, in 4K resolution) while additional extras are included on a bonus Blu-ray. In addition to the Deluxe Limited Edition linked above, standard editions were released on 4K UHD and Blu-ray, along with standalone Blu-ray releases of The Godfather and The Godfather: Part II. This week, The Godfather Trilogy had an HD share of 88% and 78% of units sold from the 4K UHD format, easily topping the UHD market share chart.

Dropping to second place on the Blu-ray chart is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's The Matrix Resurrections. Arriving almost 20 years after the previous film in the Matrix franchise, The Matrix Resurrections experienced bad luck when, after starting production in February 2020, the coronavirus pandemic struck and halted filming for six months. Eventually, the film was completed and released in late December 2021, becoming the last film on Warner Bros. 2021 slate and thus, the last film to receive a simultaneous release on the studio's HBO Max streaming service. Despite a theatrical marketplace that had picked up with Sony Pictures' release of Spider-Man: No Way Home the previous week, The Matrix Resurrections underperformed at the box office, debuting in third place with just over $10 million on its opening weekend, and eventually grossing over $37 million domestically and over $156 million globally, against a budget of $190 million. This week, The Matrix Resurrections sold 86% as many Blu-ray units as The Godfather Trilogy, with an HD share of 59% and 16% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Remaining in third place on the Blu-ray chart is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's Encanto. The 60th film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios, Encanto was released over the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, grossing over $40 million over the five-day holiday weekend, on its way to just over $96 million domestically. While its numbers would ordinarily be disappointing, the box office for Encanto actually made it the highest-grossing animated film of 2021 at the time. Internationally, things were even better, with over $156 million, for a global total of over $252 million so far. The film has also received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Animated, in addition to an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. This week, Encanto sold 45% as many Blu-ray units as The Godfather Trilogy, with an HD share of 40% and 7% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Elsewhere on the charts, Disney and Searchlight Pictures' Nightmare Alley (2021) debuted at No. 4 on the Blu-ray chart, with an HD share of 73% and 45% of units sold from the 4K UHD format. Paramount's limited series Dexter: New Blood (2021-2022) debuted at No. 10 on the Blu-ray chart, with an HD share of 29%.
