For the week that ended on March 5th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Encanto reclaimed the top spot on both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the first time since its release three weeks ago. The 60th film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios,
Encanto was released over the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, grossing over $40 million over the five-day holiday weekend, on its way to just over $95 million domestically. While its numbers would ordinarily be disappointing, the box office for
Encanto actually made it the highest-grossing animated film of 2021 at the time. Internationally, things were even better, with over $153 million, for a global total of over $248 million so far. The film has also received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Animated, in addition to an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. This week,
Encanto had an HD share of 45% and 7% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to second place on both charts in its third week is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Eternals. The 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zhao's epic opened atop of the box office in November 2021 with over $71 million. Eventually, it grossed over $164 million domestically over $402 million globally. This week,
Eternals sold 98% as many Blu-ray units as
Encanto, with an HD share of 54% and 18% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Remaining in third place on the Blu-ray chart is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Jason Reitman's film, which follows on from the first two
Ghostbusters films directed by his father, Ivan Reitman, was filmed in 2019 for a planned 2020 release, but after the coronavirus pandemic struck, the film was pushed into 2021 and bounced around the calendar a few times before finally opening in November 2021. On its opening weekend, the film topped the box office with $44 million, on its way to over $129 million domestically and over $197 million worldwide. This week,
Ghostbusters: Afterlife sold 96% as many Blu-ray units as
Encanto, with an HD share of 53% and 12% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, the week's top new release was Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Belfast, which came in at No. 11 on the Blu-ray chart. Kenneth Branagh's film about life in the Northern Ireland city at the start of the Troubles has garnered critical acclaim and seven Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Further down, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's release of
The Batman: The Complete Series (2004-2008) debuted at No. 18 on the Blu-ray chart.
