For the week that ended on February 19th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Eternals debuted on top of both both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The 26th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Zhao's epic opened atop of the box office in November 2021 with over $71 million. Eventually, it grossed over $164 million domestically and has a current global total of over $402 million. This week,
Eternals had an HD share of 67% and 30% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Remaining in second place on the Blu-ray chart is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Jason Reitman's film, which follows on from the first two
Ghostbusters films directed by his father, Ivan Reitman, was filmed in 2019 for a planned 2020 release, but after the coronavirus pandemic struck, the film was pushed into 2021 and bounced around the calendar a few times before finally opening in November 2021. On its opening weekend, the film topped the box office with $44 million, on its way to over $129 million domestically and over $197 million worldwide. This week,
Ghostbusters: Afterlife sold 50.1% as many Blu-ray units as
Eternals, with an HD share of 56% and 12% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to third place on the Blu-ray chart is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Encanto. The 60th film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios,
Encanto was released over the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, grossing over $40 million over the five-day holiday weekend, on its way to just over $94 million domestically. While its numbers would ordinarily be disappointing, the box office for
Encanto actually made it the highest-grossing animated film of 2021 at the time. Internationally, things were a bit better, with over $145 million. The film has also received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Animated, in addition to an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. This week,
Encanto sold 49.8% as many Blu-ray units as
Eternals, with an HD share of 53% and 13% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
