For the week that ended on February 12th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Encanto took the top spot on the Blu-ray-only chart. The 60th film produced by Walt Disney Animation Studios,
Encanto was released over the Thanksgiving holiday in the United States, grossing over $40 million over the five-day holiday weekend, on its way to just over $94 million domestically. While its numbers would ordinarily be disappointing, the box office for
Encanto actually made it the highest-grossing animated film of 2021 at the time. Internationally, things were a bit better, with over $145 million. The film has also received critical acclaim and won several awards, including the Golden Globe for Best Motion Picture - Animated, in addition to an Oscar nomination for Best Animated Feature. This week,
Encanto had an HD share of 60% and 20% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to second place on the Blu-ray chart is the week's overall top disc seller, Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Ghostbusters: Afterlife. Jason Reitman's film, which follows on from the first two
Ghostbusters films directed by his father, Ivan Reitman, was filmed in 2019 for a planned 2020 release, but after the coronavirus pandemic struck, the film was pushed into 2021 and bounced around the calendar a few times before finally opening in November 2021. On its opening weekend, the film topped the box office with $44 million, on its way to over $129 million domestically and over $197 million worldwide. This week,
Ghostbusters: Afterlife sold 99% as many Blu-ray units as
Encanto, with an HD share of 56% and 12% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in third place on both charts is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City. The seventh film in the film franchise,
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City serves as a reboot of the series that previously starred Mila Jovovich in six films directed by Paul W.S. Anderson. Also opening over the Thanksgiving holiday, the film ultimately grossed over $16 million domestically and over $38 million globally. This week,
Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City sold 64% as many Blu-ray units as
Encanto, with an HD share of 66% and 22% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Catwoman: Hunted and Best Picture nominee
King Richard debuted at No. 6 and No. 10, respectively, on the Blu-ray chart, with the former also making it to No. 5 on the UHD chart.
