For the week that ended on January 29th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Dune (2021) remained on top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its third week. Previously adapted for the screen in 1984 by David Lynch, Villeneuve's adaptation of the 1965 novel by Frank Herbert was made over a three-year period and intended to be a late 2020 release. However, once the coronavirus pandemic struck, the film, which has a $165 million budget, had to be moved. Ultimately,
Dune would be released in a staggered international rollout in September and October 2021. When it opened domestically, the film topped the box office for two weeks, pulling in $41 million on its opening weekend and ultimately grossing over $107 million, with a global box office of over $399 million so far. This week,
Dune had an HD share of 71% and 27% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Rising up two spots to second place on both charts this week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
No Time to Die remained on top of both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts in its third week of release. The 25th James Bond film, which is said to be star Daniel Craig's final appearance as the character, was filmed in 2019 and originally set for an April 2020 release. However, the coronavirus pandemic arrived in force a month before in March 2020, forcing the first in a series of major postponements for the film, which went from April 2020 to November 2020 and then to April 2021, before the film finally opened on September 30th, 2021 in the UK and October 8th, 2021 in the US, a delay of some 18 months. On its opening weekend,
No Time to Die received critical praise and topped the box office, earning over $60 million over the four-day Columbus Day holiday weekend, on its way to a domestic total of over $160 million so far. Internationally, the film has so far grossed over $613 million, bringing its worldwide total to over $774 million. This week,
No Time to Die sold 94% as many Blu-ray units as
Dune, with an HD share of 72% and 29% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to third place on both charts is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Halloween Kills. The sequel to Green's
Halloween (2018) is a direct continuation of events from that film and was initially intended to be released in October 2020, but was delayed an entire year due to the coronavirus pandemic. On its opening weekend, the film topped the box office with a huge $50.4 million, easily the best opening weekend of the pandemic for an R-rated film. Unfortunately, reviews for the film were mixed to negative, but ultimately, the film grossed over $92 million domestically and over $131 million worldwide on a budget of only $20 million. This week,
Halloween Kills sold 37% as many Blu-ray units as
Dune, with an HD share of 49% and 12% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
The Punisher (2004) shot to No. 5 on the Blu-ray chart and topped the UHD market share chart thanks to a new Best Buy Exclusive 4K SteelBook edition. This week,
The Punisher had an HD share of over 99% and 91% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
