For the week that ended on December 4th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The 25th film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe is based on the character Shang-Chi, who debuted in 1973 in the comics, and is the first MCU film to have an Asian lead and a majority Asian cast, notably being the first role in a Hollywood film for Tony Chiu-Wai Leung, one of Hong Kong's major stars. Originally planned to be released in Febraury 2021, the coronavirus pandemic caused several delays for the film, including halting the film shoot in 2020 and causing the film's release date to shift several times in conjunction with other Marvel films. Eventually, the film was released in September over the Labor Day holiday in the United States, where it received positive reviews and made over $94 million during the holiday weekend, on its way to over $224 million domestically and over $431 million globally so far. Currently, the film stands as Disney's highest-grossing film of 2021. This week,
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings had an HD share of 72% and 36% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Remaining in second place on the Blu-ray chart is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Jungle Cruise. Filmed largely in 2018, the film, which is based on the theme park attraction of the same name, was originally set for a 2019 release, before it was delayed to July 2020. However, the coronavirus pandemic changed those plans, and Disney opted to delay the film by a year, to July 2021. In May 2021, the film became the most recent to receive a simultaneous release on Disney's streaming service, while theatrically, it topped the box office on its way to over $116 million domestically. Reviews for the film were mixed and internationally, the box office was a bit less stellar, with over $103 million so far. This gives the film a total gross of over $220 million against a $200 million budget. This week,
Jungle Cruise sold 27% as many Blu-ray units as
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, with an HD share of 52% and 11% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Moving up to third place on the Blu-ray chart is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch. The animated remake of the beloved Dr. Seuss Christmas tale, which was previously adapted as both a 1966 animated TV special (
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas!) and a 2000 live-action film with Jim Carrey as The Grinch (
Dr. Seuss' How the Grinch Stole Christmas), here features Benedict Cumberbatch as the voice of the titular miser, this time in a 3D animated feature. The film was a huge hit at the box office two years ago, hauling in over $271 million domestically and over $512 million globally on a $75 million budget. This week,
Dr. Seuss' The Grinch sold 18% as many Blu-ray units as
Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, with an HD share of 34% and 2% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
