For the week that ended on October 23rd, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Free Guy again topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The sci-fi action comedy, which stars Reynolds as a bank teller who discovers he is a non-player character in a video game, was originally developed at 20th Century Fox before that studio was acquired by Disney. Subsequently, it became a 20th Century Studios title and was set for a summer 2020 release, having been filmed in 2019. However, after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Disney shifted the film to December 2020, then to March 2021, before finally releasing the film on August 13th, 2021. The film became a surprise hit on its opening weekend, topping the box office for two weeks and eventually grossing over $120 million domestically and $332 million globally thus far. This week,
Free Guy had an HD share of 63% and 19% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in second place on both charts is Paramount Home Media Distribution's
Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins. A spin-off of Paramount's
G.I. Joe film series,
Snake Eyes serves as an origin story for the character and was meant to open in late March 2020. However, the arrival of the coronavirus pandemic meant that it was pulled off the schedule and its release date was juggled several times, eventually ending up on July 23, 2021, almost sixteen months later than originally planned. Sadly, the move didn't work out, as
Snake Eyes made just $37 million globally on an $88 million budget, but hopefully home video sales will be brighter. The film got off to a good start this week, where it sold 77% as many Blu-ray units as
Free Guy, with an HD share of 61% and 18% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in third place on both charts is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's latest DC aminated movie
Injustice. Based on the popular video game
Injustice: Gods Among Us, the film is set in an alternate reality where the Joker tricks Superman into killing Lois Lane. This enrages the hero, who in his grief demands that the world come under his control. With the Justice League divided, those against Superman must team up with Batman to try and stop the Man of Steel from forming a worldwide police state. This week,
Injustice sold 67% as many Blu-ray units as
Free Guy, with an impressive HD share of 84% and 24% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
