For the week that ended on October 16th, Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Free Guy topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The sci-fi action comedy, which stars Reynolds as a bank teller who discovers he is a non-player character in a video game, was originally developed at 20th Century Fox before that studio was acquired by Disney. Subsequently, it became a 20th Century Studios title and was set for a summer 2020 release, having been filmed in 2019. However, after the onset of the coronavirus pandemic, Disney shifted the film to December 2020, then to March 2021, before finally releasing the film on August 13th, 2021. The film became a surprise hit on its opening weekend, topping the box office for two weeks and eventually grossing over $120 million domestically and $332 million globally thus far. This week,
Free Guy had an HD share of 67% and 25% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to second place on both charts in its fourth week is Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
F9: The Fast Saga AKA
Fast and Furious 9. The ninth main film in the franchise was originally planned for a 2019 release, but was delayed several times, first by the release of a spin-off film,
Fast & Furious Presents: Hobbs & Shaw and then by the coronavirus pandemic. to where the film did not get a release until May 2021 internationally and June 2021 domestically. In spite of mixed reviews, the film broke pandemic box office records and has pulled in $173 million domestically and an astounding $543 million internationally, with its $716 million worldwide total making it the second highest-grossing film of 2021, behind only China's
Hi, Mom. This week,
F9: The Fast Saga sold 36% as many Blu-ray units as
Free Guy, with an HD share of 54% and 14% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Debuting in third place on the Blu-ray chart is Lionsgate Home Entertainment's
The Green Knight. David Lowery's fantasy-adventure, which stars Dev Patel as Sir Gawain in a re-telling of the classic medieval story
Sir Gawain and The Green Knight, was released in July to positive reviews and made over $17 million at the domestic box office. This week,
The Green Knight sold 27% as many Blu-ray units as
Free Guy, with an impressive HD share of 78% and 32% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the charts, Universal's 4K UHD release for Quentin Tarantino's
Inglourious Basterds brought that film back into the Blu-ray chart at No. 7. The new 4K edition easily topped the 4K UHD chart, with 97% of units sold from the format.
