Warner Archive Announces October Releases (UPDATED)

Warner Archive will add nine new titles to its Blu-ray catalog this October. They are: Night Shift (1982), Dinner at Eight (1933), Mad Love (1935), Eye of the Devil (1966), Tex Avery Screwball Classics: Volume 3 (1942-1957), Black Lightning: The Complete Fourth Season (2020-2021), Mary Stevens, M.d. (1933), and Children of the Damned (1964).

Night Shift

Synopsis: Chuck (Henry Winkler) has given up life as a stockbroker because it was too stressful. Now, he works an easy gig as a night shift attendant at a New York City morgue. His co-worker, Bill Blazejowski (Michael Keaton), on the other hand, is always looking to make a quick buck. When Bill finds out that Chuck's prostitute neighbor, Belinda (Shelley Long), needs a place to do her work, he convinces Chuck to turn the morgue into a brothel where they can work as her pimps.

Mad Love

Synopsis: Grand Guignol theater actress Yvonne Orlac (Frances Drake) is married to concert pianist Stephen (Colin Clive) and plans to take a break from acting to tour with him. However, Dr. Gogol (Peter Lorre), her biggest fan, won't let her go so easily. When Stephen's hands are destroyed in an accident, Dr. Gogol's obsession with Yvonne leads him to replace Stephen's hands with those of a knife-wielding murderer who was sentenced to death. Soon, Stephen's new hands develop a mind of their own.

Tex Avery Screwball Classics: Volume 3

Synopsis: There were several masters of animation during Hollywood's golden era. Of the top two geniuses, one created elaborate fairy tales and ornate feature-length fantasias -- the other guy was Tex Avery. He just wanted to make you laugh. After helping develop Porky Pig, Daffy Duck and Bugs Bunny for Warner Bros., Avery moved to MGM in 1941 to create a set of comedy masterpieces that defined a new slapstick style for animation.

Dinner at Eight

Synopsis: In this comedic drama, an ambitious New York socialite plans an extravagant dinner party as her businessman husband, Oliver (Lionel Barrymore), contends with financial woes, causing a lot of tension between the couple. Meanwhile, their high-society friends and associates, including the gruff Dan Packard (Wallace Beery) and his sultry spouse, Kitty (Jean Harlow), contend with their own entanglements, leading to revelations at the much-anticipated dinner.

Eye of the Devil

Synopsis: A French winegrower (David Niven) returns to Bordeaux with his wife (Deborah Kerr) and family to face ritual sacrifice for another bad year.

The Ghost Ship / Bedlam

Bedlam

Synopsis: After getting a glimpse of the conditions at the St. Mary's of Bethlehem Asylum, known as "Bedlam," Nell Bowen (Anna Lee) is concerned that the patients are being mistreated. When she seeks to better the situation, the head of St. Mary's, George Sims (Boris Karloff), uses his political savvy to have Nell committed. Being within St. Mary's does not deter Nell, however, and she starts to turn the patients against Sims in a bid to violently oust him from power.

The Ghost Ship

Synopsis: Tom Merriam (Russell Wade) boards the freighter Altair in San Pedro, where he meets Capt. Will Stone (Richard Dix). During that first voyage, Tom begins to suspect that Stone is crazy, but he also learns that the crew is fiercely protective of him. When fellow sailor Louie (Lawrence Tierney) is killed in a freak accident, Merriam suspects Stone. However, he has no proof. As the killings continue, Tom decides to leave the ship, but the captain has other plans.

Black Lightning: The Complete Fourth Season

Synopsis: Jefferson Pierce is a hero to his community, as the father of two daughters and principal of a charter high school that serves as a beacon of hope in a neighborhood overrun by gang violence. Nine years ago, Pierce was a hero of a different sort. Gifted with the meta-human power to harness and control electricity, he kept the streets safe as the masked vigilante Black Lightning. Now, with crime and corruption spreading like wildfire, and those he cares about in the cross hairs of the menacing local gang, the 100, Black Lightning must return.

Mary Stevens, M.d.

Synopsis: Mary (Kay Francis) and Don (Lyle Talbot) graduate from medical school together, and, while Mary has a crush on Don, he has eyes for only Lois (Thelma Todd), the daughter of a prominent politician. While Mary devotes herself to her medical practice, Don wastes his talents in favor of booze and high society. When the two meet again some time later, they have an affair, and Don promises to leave his wife. After Mary discovers she is pregnant and Don finds that divorce is not simple, tragedy occurs.

Children of the Damned

Synopsis: The United Nations conducts a global survey on child development, identifying six children with exceptional intelligence. All were born under mysterious circumstances, with the mothers claiming they were conceived without a father. Brought to London to be studied, the children escape to an abandoned church. Alarmed by the children's telekinetic powers, the government prepares to destroy them, while psychologist Col. Tom Lewellin (Ian Hendry) tries to convince the authorities to spare them.
