For the week that ended on August 14th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Batman: The Long Halloween Part Two topped the Blu-ray-only chart. The animated film picks up where the June release of
Part One left off to complete the story, which is based on a 13-issue series of comics published in 1996-1997 and eventually collected into a graphic novel. Despite the announcement of a combined edition of the film to be released on 4K UHD, these split Blu-ray releases have done well, with
Part One taking third place on the Blu-ray-only chart back in June and against the second week of Warner's own
Godzilla vs. Kong and the new release of Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's
Nobody. This week,
Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two had an HD share of 85%.
Dropping to second place on the Blu-ray-only chart, but topping the overall packaged media chart, is Walt Disney Home Entertainment's
Luca topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The latest film from Pixar Animation Studios,
Luca is about a sea monster boy who can take human form on land and has adventures with a new best friend on the Italian Riviera. It was originally planned for a theatrical release, but like Pixar's
Soul before it,
Luca saw its domestic release cancelled by Disney due to the ongoing pandemic, so that in June, the film went to Disney's streaming service instead. Internationally,
Luca did open in select markets, where so far, it has grossed just $22 million. This week,
Luca sold 74% as many Blu-ray units as
Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two, with an HD share of 47% and 10% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to third place on both charts is Paramount Home Media Distribution's
A Quiet Place Part II. The horror sequel had its world premiere on March 6th, 2020 in New York and was intended to open on March 19th, 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic caused Paramount to pull the film worldwide just days before its release and after already spending tens of millions in advertising dollars. The film then moved around the calendar several times before it finally received its worldwide theatrical release on May 28th, 2021, over fourteen months later than originally planned. That strategy appears to have paid off, as
A Quiet Place Part II subsequently broke several pandemic box office records, including an opening weekend of $58.5 million, which marked the best opening weekend since Paramount's own
Sonic the Hedgehog opened over a year earlier in February 2020. The film has received positive reviews, making over $159 million domestically and over $295 million worldwide thus far. This week,
A Quiet Place Part II sold 40% as many units as
Batman: The Long Halloween - Part Two, with an HD share of 46% and 15% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
