For the week that ended on July 31st, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
A Quiet Place Part II topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts. The horror sequel had its world premiere on March 6th, 2020 in New York and was intended to open on March 19th, 2020, when the coronavirus pandemic caused Paramount to pull the film worldwide just days before its release and after already spending tens of millions in advertising dollars. The film then moved around the calendar several times before it finally received its worldwide theatrical release on May 28th, 2021, over fourteen months later than originally planned. That strategy appears to have paid off, as
A Quiet Place Part II subsequently broke several pandemic box office records, including an opening weekend of $58.5 million, which marked the best opening weekend since Paramount's own
Sonic the Hedgehog opened over a year earlier in February 2020. The film has received positive reviews, making over $157 million domestically and over $290 million worldwide thus far. This week,
A Quiet Place Part II had an HD share of 58%, with 25% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Dropping to second place on both charts is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Mortal Kombat (2021). Based on the immensely popular series of fighting video games,
Mortal Kombat is the third live-action adaptation after two previous films in 1995 and 1997. This 2021 version was one of the first films to debut both theatrically and on Warner's HBO Max streaming service back in April, eventually finishing its domestic run with over $42 million and a global total of over $83 million. This week,
Mortal Kombat sold 34% as many units as
A Quiet Place Part II, with an HD share of 59% and 13% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
But such is the draw of
A Quiet Place Part II that in third place on the Blu-ray chart is Paramount's
A Quiet Place 2-Movie Collection, a two-disc Blu-ray set featuring the new film and its 2018 predecessor
A Quiet Place. This week,
A Quiet Place 2-Movie Collection sold 25% as many units as
A Quiet Place Part II, with a perfect HD share of 100%.
One other bright spot this week is from Shout Factory. Their remastered Collector's Edition Blu-ray of David Cronenberg's
The Dead Zone (1983) came in at No. 12 on the Blu-ray chart.
