For the week that ended on July 17th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Mortal Kombat (2021) topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts, ending the four-week reign of
Godzilla vs. Kong. Based on the immensely popular series of fighting video games,
Mortal Kombat is the third live-action adaptation after two previous films in 1995 and 1997. This 2021 version was one of the first films to debut both theatrically and on Warner's HBO Max streaming service back in April, eventually finishing its domestic run with over $42 million and a global total of over $83 million. This week,
Mortal Kombat had an HD share of 67%, with 22% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
In second place on both charts is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Wrath of Man. An adaptation of the 2004 French film
Le Convoyeur (AKA
Cash Truck),
Wrath of Man was directed by Guy Ritchie and marks his fourth collaboration with actor Jason Statham, here starring as a new security guard for an armored truck company, who foils a robbery attempt with expert skills, raising questions about his true identity and motives. opened in May after being delayed from January due to the pandemic. It made $27 million domestically, topping the box office in its first weekend. Internationally, it has been on a staggered worldwide rollout (for example, it does not open in the UK until later this month) but so far, it has made over $100 million worldwide. This week,
Wrath of Man sold 37% as many units as
Mortal Kombat, with an HD share of 58%.
Dropping to third place in its fifth week is Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's
Godzilla vs. Kong The long-awaited action showdown brought escapist fun to a formerly desolate theatrical marketplace and made over $100 million at the domestic box office on its way to over $459 million worldwide. To that end, when it came time for the film's home video release, Warner obliged fans with a bevy of format options, including a
Blu-ray 3D edition. This week,
Godzilla vs. Kong sold 27% as many units as
Mortal Kombat, with an HD share of 60% and 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.
Elsewhere on the Blu-ray chart, Paramount Home Media Distribution's
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run came in at No. 4. The third theatrical adventure for the beloved anthropomorphic sea sponge was shaken up by the pandemic and opened last year in Canadian cinemas, while it took several more months to open domestically in limited release and was also sent to Paramount's streaming service. This week,
The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge on the Run sold 14% as many units as
Mortal Kombat, with an HD share of 43%.
And once again, a sale on titles from the Criterion Collection continues to hear fruit. A new Criterion release this week is Bill Duke's
Deep Cover, which came in at No. 9, while Andrei Tarkovsky's
Mirror enjoyed a second week in the top ten. Even Howard Hawks'
Bringing Up Baby stayed in the top twenty, at No. 16.
