Blu-ray Sales: May 9-15: Justice Society Plays a Game with The Marksman

For the week that ended on May 15th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Justice Society: World War II. The 41st DC direct-to-video animated adventure finds Barry Allen's modern-day version of the Flash transported back in time to fight Nazis with the Justice Society of America. This week, Justice Society: World War II had an HD share of 75%, with 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

In second place on the Blu-ray sales chart is another new release, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's The Marksman. The latest Liam Neeson action vehicle sees him star as a rancher and former Marine who must protect a young boy from a drug cartel and this week it topped the overall disc sales chart. The film received a theatrical release in January 2021 and topped the box office for two weeks, on its way to over $15 million at the domestic box office and over $22 million worldwide. This week, The Marksman, sold 89% as many units as Justice Society: World War II, with an HD share of 41%.

In third place on the Blu-ray sales chart is Lionsgate Home Entertainment's Saw. James Wan's low-budget horror film about a mysterious killer who taunts his victims with deadly traps spawned a massive billion-dollar franchise and eight subsequent films, including the recent theatrical release Spiral. This week saw the original film released for the first time on 4K UHD combo pack with a remastered Blu-ray, new extras and even Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook edition, a release strategy which appears to have paid off handsomely. Saw sold 44% as many units as Justice Society: World War II, with a perfect HD share of 100% and a whopping 99.7% of units sold from the new 4K UHD release.

There's more good news this week, as a remastered edition of Amy Heckerling's classic comedy Fast Times at Ridgemont High from the Criterion Collection came in at No. 11 (so close!), while the long-anticipated Blu-ray debut for John Guillermin's King Kong (1976), which was released by Shout Factory as a two-disc collector's edition, came in at No. 22.
