Moving to catalog titles, this week is chock full of them, but perhaps the most major slate is from Paramount Home Media Distribution, who present a 4K UHD upgrade for George Cukor's My Fair Lady, starring Audrey Hepburn, Rex Harrison, Stanley Holloway, Wilfrid Hyde-White, and Gladys Cooper. The timeless musical, which won 8 Oscars (including Best Picture) and has delighted generations the world over, arrives on the format thanks to an 8K scan of its 65mm large format negative and the results are tremendous. Reviewer Martin Liebman describes the disc as "breathtaking" and says it is "pure, unadulterated, magnificent, resplendent, choose-your-adjective Dolby Vision delight." He continues on to say the presentation is "gorgeously filmic, featuring that super-fine yet very critical and ultimately flattering grain structure that is an ever-present delight...It's nearly impossible to fathom anything on this format looking any better than this". Read Martin's full review of the disc here.
Also from Paramount this week comes a 4K UHD upgrade for J.J. Abrams' Super 8, starring Kyle Chandler, Elle Fanning, Joel Courtney, Gabriel Basso, and Noah Emmerich. Now celebrating its 10th anniversary, the film has been newly remastered and presented with Dolby Vision HDR. Martin Liebman says the UHD presentation is "very natural and very pleasing to the eye, a perfect film-like look and one that thrives at this resolution...The Dolby Vision color grading further impresses and improves upon the [Blu-ray]...The UHD finds a much more natural color spectrum here, amplifying the darker corners and holding much more firmly to true black than the Blu-ray...a wonderful UHD. It's absolutely one of the best on the market". Read Martin's full review of the disc here. A Best Buy Exclusive SteelBook edition will also be available.
Another 4K UHD upgrade this week comes from Blue Underground, for Don Taylor's The Final Countdown, starring Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen, Katharine Ross, James Farentino, and Ron O'Neal. Newly remastered from a 4K scan of the original camera negative and presented with Dolby Vision HDR and a new Dolby Atmos audio option, the 4K UHD release also comes with a newly remastered Blu-ray and soundtrack CD disc, as well as an illustrated booklet and lenticular slipcover. Additionally, extras from the previous Blue Underground Blu-ray release have been carried over to this release. Reviewer Svet Atanasov is highly impressed, writing that "In native 4K the film looks simply incredible...if you project on a big screen, you will get the feeling that you are at your favorite local cinema". Svet's full review, which has screenshots from the newly remastered Blu-ray, can be found here.
Yet more 4K UHD is coming though, with Arrow Video's 4K Blu-ray release of Sergio Corbucci's western Django, starring Franco Nero, Gino Pernice, Giovanni Ivan Scratuglia, Silvana Bacci and Alberto Dell'Acqua. Originally set for a November 2018 release on Blu-ray, Arrow's release of Django was pulled due to rights issues just before release, and then pulled a second time in 2020, before the rights issues were finally resolved and the Blu-ray was released in November 2020. Now Arrow are issuing the film in the 4K UHD format with Dolby Vision HDR, accompanied by a Blu-ray version of Ferdinando Baldi's Texas, Adios (also starring Franco Nero) and a raft of extras, including interviews on both film with Franco Nero, audio commentaries for both films and several interviews with cast and crew for each film.
