Blu-ray Sales: March 13-20: The Croods: A New Age Is on Top Yet Again

For the week that ended on March 20th, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's The Croods: A New Age topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the fourth week in a row. With a box office haul of over $160 million worldwide so far, the DreamWorks animated sequel became one of the few theatrical bright spots of 2020 and now it seems poised to repeat that success on home video, as well. This week, The Croods: A New Age had an HD share of 49%, with 5% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Remaining in second place on both charts in its third week is Sony Pictures Home Entertainment's Monster Hunter. The film adaptation of the long-running Capcom video game series was shot in late 2018 and originally set for a 2020 theatrical release, but it was rescheduled several times due to the coronavirus pandemic. Ultimately, Monster Hunter was released theatrically on December 18th, 2020 and made just over $14 million domestically and over $29 million worldwide. This week, Monster Hunter sold 63% as many units as The Croods: A New Age, with an HD share of 59% and 17% of units sold from the 4K UHD format.

Happily, though, in third place on the Blu-ray chart we have a new release, Universal Pictures Home Entertainment's Promising Young Woman. The black comedy starring Carey Mulligan originally premiered at the Sundance Film Festival in January 2020, but the film's planned April 2020 theatrical release had to be scrapped due to the coronavirus outbreak in the US. Eventually, the film did receive a theatrical release in December 2020, to critical acclaim and--a day before its Blu-ray release--five Oscar nominations, including including Best Picture, Best Director, and Best Actress for Mulligan. This week, Promising Young Woman sold 22% as many units as The Croods: A New Age, with an HD share of 60%.
