Blu-ray Sales: January 9-16: Tenet Is Back on Top of the Charts

For the week that ended on January 16th, Warner Bros. Home Entertainment's Tenet topped both the Blu-ray-only and overall packaged media charts for the fourth time in five weeks of release. Last week, Christopher Nolan's epic action-adventure was briefly dethroned by Paramount Home Media Distribution's Love and Monsters, but even though both films were among the relatively few post-pandemic theatrical releases, Paramount's post-apocalyptic romance was a last-minute rescheduling and lacked the massive media campaign and pent-up audience anticipation of the Nolan would-be blockbuster, so it is perhaps not surprising to see the latter win the day yet again. Tenet had an HD share of 75% and 38% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.

Dropping to number two on both charts in its second week is Paramount Home Media Distribution's Love and Monsters. Like Tenet the post-apocalyptic adventure received a limited theatrical release domestically in October 2020, after being moved up from February 2021 and it managed to bring in over $1 million at the box office. This week, Love and Monsters sold 63% as many units as Tenet, with an HD share of 51% and 12% of units sold were from the 4K UHD format.

In third place on the Blu-ray chart this week is a newcomer, GKIDS and Shout Factory's anime film Lupin III: The First. Released in Japan in December of 2019, the film marked the first 3D computer-animated adventure for the legendary gentleman thief, who was created by famed Japanese Manga artist Monkey Punch (Kazuhiko Katō) in 1967, and has since been the star of several traditionally animated anime films and television series in the decades since. In the United States, the film was released in October in both subtitled and dubbed versions, both of which carried over to the Blu-ray release, which was also made available as a Limited SteelBook Edition. Lupin III: The First sold 38% as many units as Tenet, with a fabulous HD share of 96%.
